You can always tell the mark of someone – celebrity or everyday person on the street – by how they step up during times of great crisis and challenge. And, in the midst of tragic wildfires on the island of Maui which have cost the lives of fifty-five souls as well as having left many more folks homeless, some celebrities are attempting to help and support the citizens of this besieged locale, showing that at the end of the day we’re all much more than the color of our skin or bigger and more important than our own respective sexualities; some things actually matter more than checking boxes at this critical moment.
One of the people stepping forward at this moment of crisis is superstar entrepreneur, actress, author, journalist and larger than life personality Oprah Winfrey, reports our friends over at The Hollywood Reporter.
According to reports, Winfrey was boots on the ground in Maui this past Thursday in an effort to assist the people of that island who have been so negatively impacted by the fires which began due to the potent and deadly cocktail of dry conditions and heavy winds.
While personally distributing much needed supplies for people at the War Memorial Auditorium in Maui, Winfrey was spotted by a BBC camera crew who finangled a sound bite or two from the busy philanthropist.
An obviously emotional Winfrey paused before speaking with the BBC about the fires, saying that “It’s a little overwhelming, you know. But I’m really so pleased to have so many people, you know, supporting, and people are just bringing what they can and doing what they can.”
The former daytime talk show personality went on to reveal that she had been actively seeking ways to support and assist in helping those most affected by the wildfires.
“I came earlier, just to see what people needed, and then went shopping because often you make donations of clothes or whatever, and it’s not really what people need,” Winfrey said. “I actually went to Walmart and Costco and got pillows, shampoo, diapers, sheets, pillowcases.”
Winfrey is only the latest public person to come out and talk about their own efforts in helping Maui; Connie Britton and Jason Momoa are also taking an active hand in fighting against this disaster-in-the-making.
Winfrey, who owns a home and a 2,000 acre farm on the island, was clearly shaken as she concluded her interview: “It’s a little overwhelming, you know. But I’m really so pleased to have so many people, you know, supporting, and people are just bringing what they can and doing what they can.”
Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Maui during this extremely dangerous and devastating time.
