Rankings The Best Picture Winners Of The 1950s

I am done with my retroactive film awards. However, I still have an itch to go a bit further into the past. My awards ended with 1960, but what to do with the 1950s? I got myself an idea. I am ceding to the Oscars in one way here, but will still be bringing my own feelings to the party. What I am going to do is rank all 10 Best Picture winners from the 1950s. I won’t be offering up alternate winners, but the ‘50s is an interesting decade of Best Picture recipients from the Oscars. Here is my ranking.

10. Gigi

9. The Greatest Show on Earth

8. Around the World in 80 Days

7. An American in Paris

6. On the Waterfront

5. Marty

4. Ben-Hur

3. All About Eve

2. From Here to Eternity

1. The Bridge on the River Kwai

The top two were clear to me, and in this order. There is one great movie that won Best Picture in the ‘50s, and that’s Bridge on the River Kwai. That is a standout film among all ‘50s films. From Here to Eternity is really good as well. Then, there were a few fine films that were a bit more mixed up. The bottom three were also clear to me, and Gigi was an easy call for last. I walked out of that film when it was screened in a film class I was in. It’s bad, and utterly bizarre. Not in a good, curiosity way either. Gigi is a misfire of a film, and it is one of the worst Best Picture winners ever.
