Getting closer to the most-recent season of The Simpsons by the week! I’m not up to the 27th season. The fact they could generate any quality by this point was notable. Now, this is still before the recent revamp that has given The Simpsons, say, a third or fourth life. It’s a chore to get through every episode of the vast wilderness of mid-to-late-period Simpsons, so here are the five episodes to check out from season 27.
1. “Cue Detective”
This is a rough season, the worst in a bit. It’s forgettable in many ways. This is the second episode of the season and, honestly, I remember zero about the season premiere. I do remember “Cue Detective,” though, which is a slight story but a fun episode.
2. “Halloween of Horror”
This is the one standout episode of the 27th season of The Simpsons. It’s the first Halloween episode that isn’t a “Treehouse of Horror” episode. Instead, it actually involves the Simpsons and Springfield celebrating Halloween. Stuff actually happens within the world of the show. That’s notable as is, but the episode is also good as well.
3. “Barthood”
Yes, a very of-the-moment parody of Boyhood. In a better season, I wouldn’t include it. The episode isn’t a standout in terms of quality. However, it is ambitious, and it does break from the form. If you have been churning through seasons of The Simpsons, even five episodes at a time, that has value.
4. “The Burns Cage”
I think this may be the first episode that acknowledges Smithers is gay in a significant way. At the very least, the first with a notable plot built around it. Smithers finally gives up on earning the affection of Mr. Burns and Springfieldians set him up on dates.
5. “Fland Canyon”
The Flanderers and the Simpsons go to the Grand Canyon. That’s notable. That’s something. Yeah, this is a rough season. Get through these five episodes and hope the next season is better. Hey, if you just want to watch “Halloween of Horror,” I get it. Trust me.
