Have you been wondering when Marvel is going to get around to giving Namor, otherwise known as the Sub-Mariner, his own live-action story arc? If so, you’re not the only one! Countless fans have been eager to understand why Marvel Studios haven’t yet brought one of their longest-standing and most nuanced characters to life in a leading role.
As a few dedicated movie and TV sleuths have discovered, there has been a stumbling block in place preventing the realization of Namor in all his glory. Back in the 1990s, Marvel Comics sold the rights to the Sub-Mariner to Universal Pictures, throwing a spanner into their own works when Marvel later paired up with Disney to begin telling their own stories on screen.
Happily, the arrangement with Universal up until now has allowed Marvel to place Namor in a supporting role. This opened the door for the fan-favorite anti-hero to appear as Shuri’s arch-nemesis in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
However, rumors now suggest that rights to the Sub-Mariner character may soon be returning home, clearing the path for a movie or TV series centering on his story. If that’s the case, news that Hollywood heartthrob Enzo Zelocchi has thrown his hat into the ring for the part will have the star’s many fans and millions of social media followers flying into a flutter!
Why Enzo Zelocchi Would Make an Epic Sub-Mariner
So far, Marvel has cast some serious heavyweight Hollywood talent as their most iconic superheroes and villains. Joining the side of the good guys, we’ve seen Chris Hemsworth play the role of Thor and Paul Judd step in as Ant-Man. On the darker side of things, we’ve seen Jake Gylennhaal take a turn as Mysterio and Tom Hiddleston work his magic as the mischievous Loki.
However, one of the things that makes the Marvel Universe so popular is its more complicated and contradictory characters. From The Hulk to Dr. Strange to Deadpool, many of the franchise’s most familiar faces are ultimately antiheroes, showing us an internal struggle between good and evil that reflects the external conflict around them.
Excitingly, the character of Sub-Mariner is just as nuanced. In fact, Namor has a long history on the comic book page of alternating between being on the side of good or evil. There are few actors who could pull off this multi-faceted nature, but for actor Enzo Zelocchi, being many things at once comes as second nature.
Zelocchi has long showcased his skills in wearing many hats, both in front of and behind the camera. The Italian-American creative is known for his capacity to serve as writer, director, producer, and actor on the movie set and continues to add each of these roles to his ever-growing resume.
On-screen, Zelocchi’s repertoire has spanned the noble hero in films like No War and The Source, and shown darker more villainous shades in features such as Unbreakable Souls and Mantus.
As for portraying the Sub-Mariner’s incredible range of superpowers, which include being able to fly, breathe underwater, and direct electricity, Zelocchi has already demonstrated an aptitude for a broad array of dramatic action shots. We can even enjoy a preview of what the Sub-Mariner’s electric power might look like, thanks to a recent trailer for upcoming movie The Source. If that doesn’t spell destiny, then we don’t know what does!
