In an effort to combat the growing issue of homelessness and poverty in their community, brothers Elie and Charbel Douna have launched a charity organization, SWAG Illawarra. The initiative aims to provide support to those who need it most, demonstrating that they are not alone and that there are people who care about their well-being.
Elie Douna, in a recent blog post, shared the motivations behind their initiative. “Growing up, Charbel and I were always aware of the disparities in our society. We saw people in our community who were struggling, who didn’t have the basic necessities of life that many of us take for granted. It was a reality that was hard to ignore, and it touched our hearts deeply,” he said.
Their Christian faith played a significant role in shaping their perspectives. “The teachings of Jesus Christ, particularly his emphasis on love, compassion, and service to others, resonated with us. We were taught to ‘love your neighbor as yourself’ (Mark 12:31), and we felt a strong calling to put this teaching into action,” Elie added.
Charbel Douna echoed his brother’s sentiments, emphasizing the role of their faith in their mission. “Our faith continues to be our guiding light in this journey. It reminds us of the importance of empathy and compassion, and it motivates us to keep going even when things get tough. We believe that every act of kindness, no matter how small, can make a big difference in someone’s life,” he stated.
The brothers have found the experience of starting and running SWAG Illawarra to be rewarding. “It has taught us the value of community, the power of faith, and the impact of simple acts of kindness. But most importantly, it has shown us that when we reach out to help others, we are not just giving; we are also receiving. We receive the joy of seeing someone else’s life improve, the satisfaction of knowing we’ve made a difference, and the blessing of being able to serve others,” Elie shared.
SWAG Illawarra operates every second Monday evening, located just behind the main Wollongong Crown St Mall on Burelli Street. The brothers encourage anyone who feels moved to help to support their cause, reminding everyone that every act of kindness counts, and together, we can make a difference.
