S.F. Johnson releases the nostalgic ‘Strangers’

Spending most of his 20s as a songwriter under Leeds-based band Goodbye Chanel, later known as Modern Pleasure, indie-pop artist S.F. Johnson then made the move to Tokyo in 2018. It’s here that he dived into music solo, with his debut EP ‘Songs from an Empty Orchestra’ hitting the industry in 2021. His self-proclaimed ‘Motel-pop’ signature sound is now once again being broadcasted in the lead up to his forthcoming album ‘Digital Utopia’.

The latest single to get us excited for this project is ‘Strangers’. It’s a track that takes the combination of alt-rock, new wave and disco to create a blend of modernity and nostalgia through a glistening sonic space full of guitars, synths, bass lines and drums. It’s catchy and captivating, and refreshing to hear as something truly different in the current music scene.

On the new single, Johnson says that, “Strangers is about shaking off the things that get you down, reflecting and acknowledging change. Sometimes the things that once brought happiness, no longer do. To be a stranger in your own game is a weird feeling. I think it’s important to acknowledge this and move on, rather than live in something that no longer allows you to grow.”

‘Digital Utopia’ is becoming highly anticipated by fans and tastemakers as Johnson continues to tease the introspective and hazy sound that the project is set to build on.
