INTERVIEW | SMILEZ discusses his “I Hate My Ex” music video

VENTS Magazine recently had the pleasure of interviewing pop/rap artist SMILEZ about his brand new “I Hate My Ex” music video. The interview can be read below!

What ideas did you have in your head when it came to creating the music video for “I Hate My Ex”?

The main idea was having different girls sing the lyrics to the song, ‘cause I wanted to emphasize that it’s not just like a guys thing, it’s for every gender, really. Outside of that, the song is so lighthearted I just wanted the video to be fun.

On the topic of exes, do you have any ex-girlfriend horror stories that you can share?

Honestly, I think I’ve been thru every possible horrible ex-girlfriend situation you could be in. When I first got sober – I’m talking like fresh out of rehab – I got a sponsor in AA, and my ex-gf hooked up with my sponsor. Which is fucked on both sides of that I cut both of them off for sure. This is a common ex story – the old “I’m gonna fuck all of your friends” line a true testament to the wraith of a heartbroken, toxic person.

Being in the music industry for a good while now, how determined were you to make a name for yourself?

Music is like the air that I breathe; I have to make music, I have to create, otherwise I lose myself. So, to make a name in music has always been a goal it just makes everything more fun.

What do you like about directing your own music videos?

It’s really similar to making music for me. You’re creating this whole visual representation, this whole world around your music. I just love it. I love it editing, coming up with ideas, everything.

What is it like blending two genres, rap and rock, together into one style? How challenging is it?

It’s like you’re building a puzzle with every song. I try to have a bit of both genres in every song because I like how they sound together. It’s more exciting when it comes to producing; finding the right mix of 808s and guitar riffs is just different and interesting to me.

Who are some of your biggest influences in the music industry today?

I like a lot of different stuff. I love all the legends, like Drake and Kanye, but right now it’s all about Pink Tape by Lil Uzi Vert. Maybe because it’s also in that lane of mixing rock and hip-hop, but it’s so cool to see someone at the forefront of culture experimenting and making new sounds.

Ur in My World was your first commercial album that was released early last month. What was your favorite part of the album creation process?

It was just a lot of fun to make. It was really me, myself, and I, just on my computer making shit, recording shit. It was an at-home DIY project and I loved just putting it all together.

What can fans of Smilez look forward to in the future?

More new music. I’m already working on the next project and it’s going to be crazy.
