Actress and Singer/Songwriter Lily Brooks O’Briant is proving her star is on the rise! Her newest single entitled “Wish I Could Forget You” just released and it is going to be another hit for this young talent. She is busy juggling her role on the long-running soap “The Young and They Restless” with her music career, yet Lily still found time for this interview. Enjoy!
Your new single just released and is entitled “Wish I Could Forget You”. Tell us about it.
“Wish I Could Forget You” is about the aftermath of a breakup entwined with memories both good and bad. It is about wishing you would forget every part of that relationship because you will never again have the good times and the bad times are too painful to remember.
2. A lot of your singles are about relationships. Is it cathartic for you to express yourself musically?
After going through my first ever break up I really found songwriting as therapeutic for me and the best way for me to express my emotions! It took me a while to build up the courage but once I did, I decided to start recording and releasing my music to maybe help other people who are going through things similar to me.
3. You have been in musicals on Broadway and performed live with your original music. If you had to choose one, which would you choose and why?
I absolutely would not be able to choose! Music theater has shaped me as an actress and as a musician and I seriously wouldn’t be the actress or songwriter/performer I am today without all of the lessons musical theater has taught me. But I think that songwriting and performing my original music is the next step in my career!
4. You are currently on The Young and The Restless. How is being on a daily soap opera different from other work you have done?
Yes! I play Lucy Romalotti on “The Young and The Restless”. I have had the best time working on “The Young and The Restless”, and it has been such an amazing experience. I would say that working on Y&R is more similar to working on a musical theater production than working on a film and TV production. You film an entire episode a day and you work through each scene very very quickly. Most scenes you film in one take. This was definitely a shock to me, but it’s been such a fun learning experience.
5. What’s the biggest hurdle you ever faced in your life?
I would say that the biggest hurdle I have faced in my career is going through so much rejection at such a young age. Being an actor, and being in this industry, you go through so much rejection every day. It was difficult for me to accept rejection in the beginning, but as my career has gone on, I have really learned that not booking a role is nothing personal. It has nothing to do with my talent or my ability to act, it has everything to do with things that are out of my control.
6. What is it you like most about being an entertainer?
I just love telling stories! And when I was going through my first ever breakup, I really found writing music to be so therapeutic for me in dealing with my emotions and I just wanted to share my feelings with people and see if anyone related and maybe see if my music could help people get through their own heartbreaks and struggles!
7. Do you have any future projects you can talk about?
I have been working incredibly hard on writing and recording music that I love and am passionate about. I just released a song called “Wish I Could Forget You” and will be releasing a lot of original music in the coming months. I absolutely can’t wait for y’all to hear what I have been working on! I also have truly enjoyed working on “The Young and the Restless”. It has been such an amazing experience and an honor to work on such an iconic show and learn from some amazing actors and actresses.
