1.) We’re extremely happy to welcome to the Vents pages acclaimed DJ and music artist extraordinaire, S-ONE; greetings and salutations, my friend! Before we dive into the Q&A mosh-pit, how is your summer of ‘23 treating you?
-Blessings my friend I’m extremely happy to be doing this interview with you. As for how my summer is going, it’s been a very busy one. I’ve been booked and busy in the studio and on tour. I’m super blessed to be in this space with a new song and consistent show bookings.
2.) Major congratulations on the brand-spankin’ new single Lil Bit featuring 23Dreamz! Starting from the top, what sparked the fire which led to the collaboration between you and 23Dreamz, how did that all come about?
First of all, thank you! It’s been a journey but we are here. How the collaboration came together, 23Dreamz and I worked out of the same studio here in Ontario. The talent that 23 Dreamz brought to the studio was undeniable and I knew I had to work with him within the first week of meeting him. Now here we are with our summer banger ” Lil Bit”
3.) When sifting through musical ideas to work on with one another, what made Lil Bit the perfect and only choice for you and 23Dreamz to combine talented forces on?
– Well it’s not the only track we have worked on together , but the timing of this track was perfect to put out because it had a feel good summer vibe to it . We mesh well together and our energies in the studio is always a vibe.
4.) Will Lil Bit be a one-on/one-off collaboration between you and 23Dreamz, or can fans look forward to future ventures from the two of you?
Well as I just mentioned in the previous question , this is not the only track we have together. We have lots in vault and more to come. We are super excited for you to hear all of them. We are working to give you good music. It will take some time for us to put them all out but trust me it will reach the masses.
5.) In your ever-humble opinion, what differentiates Lil Bit from the Distinguished Competition on the 2023 music landscape?
This song is in a lane of its own, with an appeal to reach a wide audience base. Anyone can listen to it and appreciate this song. From young to old it’s very appeasing to the ear and easy to listen to.
6.) You came of age in Jamaica and Canada. How have those roots informed you as an artist?
As we know reggae and dancehall originated in Jamaica and is deep rooted in my musical experience. It’s the first place that I discovered what music was and is to me. Now fast forward to when I come to Canada that’s when my ears got opened up to an abundance of all music genres. The one genre that stuck of the most to me was hip hop music . It informed me how to make my my own music with melodic melodies, strong and powerful drum patterns and baselines.
7.) You inherited your love of music from your older brother and father. What sort of music and influences did these two very important people in your life share with you during your formative years?
Well my first influence was my father in Jamaica. He introduced me to reggae dancehall artists such as Peter Tosh , Bob Marley & the Wailers , Jacob Miller , Ken Boothe and U-Roy. Then when I came to Canada I was introduced to hip hop by my brother. He introduced me to artists like ; Digital Underground, Leaders of the new school , NWA, A Tribe Called Quest, Public Enemy & X-Clan.
Back to my father , he always had a home sound system & was an avid record collector. My brother was a record collector as well and would travel to New York where he always come back with the latest Hip-Hop music. So yes they were definitely apart of my musical journey which lead to who I am now S- ONE.
8.) How did you segue from competitive hip-hop dancer to acclaimed DJ? Is there a VH1-Behind the Music origin story you could share with us?
-To be honest with you I’m a better DJ than I am a dancer. I just wanted to be apart of the Hip Hop culture. I was influenced by B Boys and break dancing . I won a few community dance offs but I never took it to the big stage .When I discovered djing and saw that I was getting better at it at a rapid pace , it was an easy segue especially when I realized that it was a service that was in and a talent that could be monetized faster than being a dancer. It was a no brainer for me. Respect to all the dancers and much love cause without you all I could not be the dj producer I am today.
9.) What’s the secret to being a truly good DJ?
Being a good Dj to me Is following the golden rule of life which is , if you want it you gotta go for it. You have to master your craft if you want to achieve greatness, so in saying that you really need to study the foundation and the mechanics of djing. Own your craft, love what you do. And never stop learning.
10.) When creating new beats, what inspires you?
My inspiration comes from everywhere. My life experiences, my mood, other music even a movie sometimes and abstract sounds and of course my lil green friend I call herbz.
11.) At the end of the day, what do you hope listeners walk away with after giving Lil Bit many-a spin on their respective hi-fi systems?
I hope they love the song share, stream the song and watch the video on my YouTube channel. I want them to walk away with satisfaction to their ears and a lil bit more love in there hearts.
12.) DJ-wise, which upcoming venues can fans catch your expert DJ skills at?
