“Breathe In” by Sisters J

Lily and Elisabeth Jackson aren’t just top-flight singers and songwriters. Elisabeth is President and CEO of E&L Publishers, her Nashville ASCAP publisher. Lily’s visual artistic talents have netted her the chance to illustrate several children’s books; she designed and drew the cover for the duo’s debut single “Open When”.

Their first love, however, is performing. They’ve been singing, individually and together, since childhood and have appeared in numerous productions throughout their lives. Sisters J are veterans of local television and radio station appearances, as well, and received widespread attention as finalists in 2016’s Hendersonville’s Got Talent. They performed in front of 15,000 impressed concert attendees as part of the competition.

Their latest single “Breathe In” solidifies their continuing move into secular pop music. The duo began their professional careers as Contemporary Christian singers and their 2019 single release “You Shine Through” garnered them well-deserved attention. They haven’t turned their backs on their faith, obviously, but diversifying their sound is a shrewd move. “Breathe In” is sparkling pop appealing to a wide swath of listeners.

There’s something for everyone in this song. Pop music fans will enjoy the up-tempo pace and the outstanding vocal melody. They’ll likewise feel nothing less than satisfied with how the sisters use that melody to their advantage. Rock fans will even hear things to love. There’s a surprising abundance of biting electric guitar running throughout the song. The verses are brimming with high-octane riffing taken at a funky clip and lead guitar passages pepper the arrangement complimentary of the talented Ted “Theo” Perlman their music producer who performs with them as well.

Those who value quality lyrical content won’t be disappointed. It isn’t high-flown performed poetry, but the clear intelligence behind the song’s message and its pointed lines will make believers out of all but the most cynical. It’s not a Pollyanna message either. Sisters J doesn’t see the world through rose-colored glasses. The underlying intent behind “Breathe In” is life-affirming and hopeful, however, and designed to appeal to a vast array of listeners.

Lily and Elisabeth’s penchant for harmonizing is the crowning touch. There isn’t a lot of daylight between their respective voices and how they entwine is the lodestar of the song’s success. Each sister is a first-class singer in their own right, but the magic happens when they merge their voices into one. It is easy to label their performance as ethereal, angelic, or some other glittering adjective. Many listeners though will recognize it, above all else, as intimate. You feel as if the sisters are singing to you alone.

It’s the latest triumph in a burgeoning career sure to have many more victories ahead. Lily and Elisabeth Jackson are in music for good, they’re born “lifers”, and you get the feeling that even if they weren’t recording artists, they would continue singing for their personal pleasure alone. We’re lucky they are singing for us. Let’s hope they continue doing so for the rest of their lives and create a legacy that will go on long after their voices are silent at last. “Breathe In” is one more step towards that lofty goal.
