A Family Affair: Actor and Writer Dave Thomas Teams with Son to Fast-Track Dark Comedy Series “The Orange”

Merriam-Webster defines ‘black comedy’ or ‘black humor’ as “humor marked by the use of usually morbid, ironic, grotesquely comic episodes.” That pretty much hits the proverbial nail on its head and, over the years, there have been a  variety of films and television shows which fall under that particular banner: Very Bad Things, After Hours, You’re The Worst, BEEF, Peep Show, Barry and What We Do in the Shadows can all wave their darkness loud and proud. They’re among some of the best examples of this oddball genre. According to our Shallow Grave pals over at the dark comedy establishment known as The Hollywood Reporter, this exclusive club is about to get a little bit larger…

Dave Thomas – the nigh legendary actor and writer from SCTV – is set to bring a few dark chuckles to television watchers with the upcoming black comedy The Orange. Making it a full-on family affair, Thomas will be joined in the development of the new show alongside his son Harrison Thomas.

The Orange is a family-focused series which showcases a family who find themselves in over their heads after witnessing a bombing perpetrated by the mob. In the best mafioso-style of storytelling, the entire family is promptly put under the witness protection program and transplanted to Rye, England where it is assumed they’ll be safe. The punchline to their new digs is that apparently the authorities have been placing all of the other families in witness relocation in the same English town as well as some of Canada’s biggest criminals. Did we mention that this is a comedy (albeit a black one)?

The Orange is being developed by father and son for BBC and CBC Studios and is being produced courtesy of the Canadian Project 10 Productions. The latter has a number of other intriguing-sounding productions in one stage of development or another (seven in total; collect ‘em all), so we’ll make sure to keep an eye on not only The Orange, but all of the others as well.

No exact word on casting, production start date or an official premiere date for The Orange, but as usual we’ll keep our oversized ears to the ground and report any and all new information as it rolls into our intrepid offices here at Vents!
