This one is just too sad.
Leandro De Niro Rodriguez, the talented grandson of acting legend Robert De Niro and a budding thespian in his own right, has passed away at the tragically young age of only 19. The sad news was reported by The Hollywood Reporter and confirmed by Leandro’s mother, Drena De Niro who also revealed the nature of his passing as being a drug overdose.
In a press release addressing the death of his grandson, Robert De Niro said that “I’m deeply distressed by the passing of my beloved grandson Leo. We’re greatly appreciative of the condolences from everyone. We ask that we please be given privacy to grieve our loss of Leo.”
Few things are more tragic than a bright and creative light being senselessly snuffed out before it’s even been given a real chance to bloom and mature. Such is the case with Leandro De Niro Rodriguez who had already begun to make a name for himself as an actor to watch with performances in films (alongside his mother) such as the recent remake of A Star Is Born as well as Cabaret Maxime, both from 2018.
In an Instagram post on Sunday, Drena De Niro said that “I don’t know how to live without you but I’ll try to go on and spread the love and light that you so made me feel in getting to be your mama.”
To add to the tragedy of losing anyone at such a young age, the nature of Leandro’s passing is a sadly familiar one for armchair Hollywood historians: The up-and-coming actor apparently passed away of a drug overdose.
“To the person who sold Leo, the fentanyl laced drugs that took him away from us I hope every day you will think of me and my family you killed us all,” Drena De Niro said in another statement.
Our condolences to the family, friends, colleagues and admirers of Leandro De Niro Rodriguez; rest easy, Leandro.
