After Four Seasons, Disney+ “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series” Hangs Up Its Dancing Shoes

And to think, they said it wouldn’t run for more than one season: After four crowd-pleasing seasons entertaining young and old alike, the somewhat clunkily (and tongue-in-cheek) titled Disney+ gem High School Musical: The Musical: The Series is doffing its leotard and putting away its high-heeled dance shoes, according to our Singing In the Rain aficionados over at The Hollywood Reporter.

The series which began life as a 2006 musical television movie known as High School Musical for the Disney Channel (back in the Dark Ages before streaming rechristened the channel ‘Disney+’) – aforementioned High School Musical: The Musical: The Series – will be slipping gently into that good night, ending its run after four entertaining seasons. But fear not, Dylan Thomas fans: The creators and cast of the show plan on going out with a bang, as is evidenced by a preview trailer for the final shebang which you can check out right here.

In an emotional statement announcing the ending of the series, Disney+ showrunner extraordinaire Tim Federle said that “This series was always about found family, and about making something you love with people you love. In other words, it was a tribute to theater kids. I can’t wait for our dedicated fan base to watch this world-class cast take a final bow…This will be our final, endgame season. This show brought the most extraordinary cast — and crew, and collaborators — to my life. To the fans who embraced our super-meta series, we ‘don’t not love you.’”

Expect things to get pretty Meta for the final season of the show, according to word ‘round industry campfire. The end note of the show will feature the actors of the series preparing a stage play entitled High School Musical 3: Senior Year. Plans get chunked out the proverbial window however when the hierarchy at The House of Mouse (i.e. “Disney”) make a preemptive announcement for High School Musical 4: The Reunion which will reunite many of the original High School Musical cast. As we said, pretty Meta stuff and right up our satire-like alley.

Comprised of eight hearty episodes, the final season of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series is scheduled to premiere all at one time on August 9 on Disney+.
