Izzy is a talented and unique artist that we are so excited to talk further with. Big welcome! We are so excited to hear you have new music coming out. Tell us all about it!
Absolutely! My new album Requiem is a story of waking up everyday to live life to the fullest. The songs are the story of a dream which itself is a journey of dreams. Allow me to walk you through it: After a violin looping intro, we start with love and lovers, an awareness of the innermost self, and a memory of God. Along the way we meet friends and intergalactic planetary consciousness. We encounter magic. The end near, we then find ourselves exiting a Berlin club greeting the sunlight of a new day imbued with a newfound love of a beautiful night remembered, when the Spirit of the Age exhorts us to build a nation of justice and to wake up from our mere dreaming. Finally, we meet up with our past selves and we are alive in a new reality, taking new risks and action, living a new life. Thematically and musically the influences of the album range from Johannes Brahms’ “A German Requiem” to the mirrors and labyrinths of Jorge Luís Borges interwoven with some Queen, Elton John, The Smiths, a bit of Talking Heads, and a dash of dance music. The album is produced by my longtime mentor and collaborator Mark Vogel. I’m also pleased to feature Grand Atrium, a revived artistic project by my very good friend and artist Devin Curry, on the song “One Day Soon.” It was such a great experience to work on all these songs together at Studio City Sound with engineering by Jeff Ryon, who also mixed and mastered all the songs. What a journey this has been and I can’t wait for everybody to experience it!
We love following along with you on social media. Do you enjoy getting to create content for your fans and what platform to connect with them is your favorite?
TikTok (@izzytime3) and Instagram (@izzytime1)are my favorite platforms to share music and content on. I LOVE creating. Creating art and music for my fans and sharing all that I can on those two platforms. I like to perform a lot of improvisations on the violin and I tell stories that I make up to the music I am writing. TikTok is also a place I get to show my storyteller side in a place other than at my live shows. I craft pieces on the violin that coincide with narratives that come into my head. On Instagram I share more violin improvs and stills and videos from my shows at Bar Lubitsch in West Hollywood and other venues around Los Angeles. I also share a lot of updates on food and coffee around LA, my hometown.
This year is flying by – what has been your highlight of the year so far and what are you looking forward to as a group?
My absolute highlight so far this year has been TRAVEL! My colleague, singer-songwriter Shaina House, and I road-tripped up to the Bay Area to back up our friend and musical collaborator, percussionist Kristen Klehr, in a performance for the Hot Air Festival at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. The three of us also played a private showcase in the city, where I got to preview “Dreamcatcher” from the new album as well as workshop some new narrative material that will be part of the Requiem live show. SF felt really alive and it was a thrill to take part in a thriving arts scene for a weekend. Additionally, in April I returned to my home away from home, New York City, to play a show at Rockwood Music Hall in Manhattan which went amazingly well! I also got to check out Sam And Friends Open Mic in South Slope, Brooklyn where I made a ton of new crazy talented artist friends. They all got a sneak peek of some of the songs that appear on Requiem and the positive feedback I got from them really pumped me up for the release even more than I already was! I’m looking forward to more music, art, and community in the coming year as I share “Requiem” with everyone.
How did you get started as an artist?
I’ve been playing music and writing poems and short stories since I was six years old. While continuing my classical studies in college, I began composing and improvising my own études, or technical studies, for violin and eventually started pairing them with stories I made up and performing for friends and teachers. After I left grad school, I recorded my first album with Mark Vogel, began jamming with rock bands, and ended up playing my first solo show at a club in Hollywood filling in for a band who had canceled. After a brief stint opening for various underground DJ parties in Berlin I spent the next decade recording a second album, teaching violin in New York City and experimenting with different sounds and genres while tinkering with my live set and adding storytelling to it. When I moved back to LA in 2016 I had a burst of inspiration and started writing a ton of original music for me to sing and that led me to get vocal coaching and to where I am today, presenting Requiem to the community and the world at large.
Thank you for your time today – where can we listen to the new music and follow you anywhere else?
My music will be available to stream on all digital platforms as well as to download on my website izzytime.com along with select merch! I will be having an album release show at Bar Lubitsch in West Hollywood on Sat., June 24 at 8 PM!
