How do we know that director extraordinaire Andy Muschietti and sister Barbara Muschietti are the absolute spot-on choice by Warner Bros. Big Wheels to drive future DC Universe films towards box-office glory? Perhaps one need look no further than the image of the Muschiettis which leads off The Hollywood Reporter’s coverage today of the very lucrative first-look deals both siblings recently inked. In the red carpet shot, both Muschiettis are beaming like catfish in front of a larger than life movie poster for Andy’s latest high-stakes film The Flash. But the real clincher in the photo for comic book nerds is the Flash insignia ring (yep, the same ring which in the funny books typically serves as a hiding spot for Barry Allen’s Flash togs) which Andy Muschietti not so subtly poses with for the camera. Waving his nerd flag loudly and proudly in front of a worldwide audience seems to indicate that the good folks at Warner Bros. Pictures have indeed – you’ll pardon the pun, we hope – captured lightning in a bottle with the Muschietti duo.
A little backtracking before we get to the obligatory press releases and sundry statements of gratitude, Dear and Constant Reader: Andy and Barbara Muschietti – the director and producer respectively of the freshly-minted movie The Flash – have officially signed aboard the Warner Bros. train with those fabled Hollywood brass rings known far and wide as “first look deals.” More insurance policy for studios determined to keep buzzed-about talent on their retainer list lest they lose them to rivals such as Universal or Paramount, first look deals are generally reserved for the best and the brightest in the entertainment industry. After establishing themselves with boffo box-office receipts for It and weathering the controversy storm known as Ezra Miller, few would argue that this sibling power couple have more than earned these particular propers.
The multiyear deal has already begun to bear fruit for the Muschiettis: The upcoming new spin on Batman (courtesy of DCU overseer James Gunn) will be helmed by Andy Muschietti and is going under the working title of The Brave and the Bold (a longtime storied comic book series from DC which featured Bats among many other long underwear types). It should be noted that Brave and the Bold is not considered as an official part of the first-look deal; consider it a very sweet enticer.
In a press release announcing the exclusive deal with the Muschiettis, Warner Big Wheels Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy said that “We couldn’t be more thrilled to strengthen our longstanding partnership with these unceasingly driven, incredibly gifted filmmakers. Between Andy’s singular skill and vision as a director and Barbara’s sharp, far-sighted instincts as a producer, they’re a true filmmaking dream team, and channel their lifelong passion into films that deliver as both compelling human stories and heart-pounding crowd pleasers. It’s one of the reasons their movies connect so broadly and powerfully with audiences all over the world, and dovetails perfectly with the kinds of films we want to make.”
We’ll keep our comic-addled brains and eyes on exactly what the Muschietti duo come up with as a part of their new arrangement with Warner Bros. In the meantime, go check out The Flash which just opened wide this very weekend and tell ‘em Vents sent you!
