Fans of the hit animated preschool series Spirit Rangers have good cause indeed to trip the light fantastic and party like it’s 1999; the Karissa Valencia-created show has just been given marching orders for a third season by streaming network Netflix, according to our ever-animated pals over at The Hollywood Reporter.
Lauded by critics and fans alike for its timely storylines and its representation of Native Americans, Spirit Rangers is a series about the adventures (and misadventures) of the Skycedar family. Like any typical family, the siblings lovingly argue while their parents look after a behemoth national park in sunny California as park rangers; hilarity and heartfelt moments ensue.
Buzz around industry quarters has it that the upcoming third season for Spirit Rangers will pick up where the sophomore season ended with a plot straight out of Greta Thunberg’s dream diary which focused on the protection of the national park’s water.
In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter touting the third season renewal, creator Karissa Valencia said that “As much as I’m happy to put California back on the map and show off our art and culture, indigeneity can be celebrated all over the world. We’ve expanded different stories based on a lot of the writers that we’ve had in the room and what tribes they were from because they had that direct connection. But for season two, the kids get their ocean powers, so we can open up to different tribes, like those in Hawaii. There’s room for so much. The show could go on forever, with different seasons all over the world.”
A big calling-card for the third season of Spirit Rangers is the inclusion of celebrated Poet Laureate of the United States Joy Harjo who will be co-writing an episode alongside Valencia while also voicing a new character.
Spirit Rangers is one of those rare birds that is fun to watch while also being educational without being preachy. How many shows can boast those attributes in this wonky day and age?
We’ll keep everyone up-to-date on the release date for season 3 of Spirit Rangers; Excelsior, True Believers!
