Maury Povich and Susan Lucci Set to Receive Lifetime Achievement Award at 50th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards

It might be slightly easy to understand why some pundits out there don’t quite get what the big deal is with awarding pop culture mainstays Susan Lucci and Maury Povich Lifetime Achievement Awards at this year’s 50th annual Daytime Emmy Awards. After all, wasn’t Povich the semi-arbiter of such questionable talk show topics on his longtime running daytime talk show The Maury Povich Show as TURN THAT GORGEOUS GAL BACK INTO MY HANDSOME SON!, I HAVE TO KNOW…IS MY FIANCÉ MY STEPBROTHER? and (my personal fave) MY MOM IS 100 PERCENT SURE I AM NOT THE FATHER OF YOUR BABY. As for Lucci, she’s built a well-deserved career on her turn as the so-called ‘Bitch Goddess’ Erica Kane on the soap opera All My Children from January 16, 1970, until the final episode on September 23, 2011. The latter, particularly, seems perhaps slightly more lifetime award-worthy, but hey, who are we to quibble? Both of these souls have added immeasurably to pop culture water cooler chit-chat and are undeniably two of the nicest folks that you’d ever want to meet in the entertainment industry.

Variety dropped the news today that both Susan Lucci and Maury Povich have Lifetime Achievement Awards forthcoming from the 50th annual Daytime Emmy Awards (just as soon as that pesky writer’s strike is settled, that is). Time to clear off your respective awards mantles, you two!

In a press release announcing their selection of Lucci and Povich as recipients of this distinguished award, NATAS Big Wheel Adam Sharp said that “We are thrilled to be recognizing two icons with Lifetime Achievement honors, Susan Lucci and Maury Povich. Both of them have had astonishing success and deep impact in the world of daytime television, Susan in drama series and Maury in talk, and have left their indelible marks on the industry. We look forward to celebrating their achievements and to also recognize the Gold and Silver Circle honorees when our celebrations are rescheduled.”

As for staying power, no one can argue that these two towering icons of daytime TV have endurance: Lucci essayed the role of Erica Kane for well over four decades and Povich kept his talk-show host mic swinging for no less than 31 seasons. Those are bragging rights no matter what industry you hang your professional fedora in.

Woman of the Hour Susan Lucci responded to this recognition by saying that she was “truly humbled to receive this esteemed award from the Academy. Throughout my career, I have been incredibly fortunate to work alongside exceptional talents and embraced by my fans that have been with me every step of the way. This honor is not just a reflection of my journey, but a testament to the enduring power of storytelling and the profound connection we are so lucky to forge with audiences all over the world through television.”

No shrinking violet himself, Povich issued his own statement about his impending award, exclaiming “I’m just blown away by this honor from the Academy. I have always had great respect for its work as I served on the National Board and was president of the New York chapter. I guess if you hang around long enough, some good things happen. It’s been a 60+ year ride for me in this business, so I feel extremely blessed with this acknowledgment.”

Well-earned accolades, Mr. Povich and Mrs. Lucci!

We’ll keep an eye or three out for when precisely the Daytime Emmy Awards will be broadcast and report back to you just as soon as we can!
