fii, welcome to VENTS! Can you tell us about your debut single, Goodbye?
Hi! The majority of Goodbye was written during a tough time. I wrote the first verse with a friend two years ago, but because I wasn’t in the ‘breakup’ headspace I struggled to finish it. Then when I really was experiencing a rough separation, I could finally bypass that mental block. I wrote it as a way to almost force myself to move on from someone and the unhealthy relationship I had with them. At the time I didn’t feel nearly as confident about moving on as the lyrics would have you believe. But I don’t always write how I feel, sometimes I write how I’d like to feel, and that’s what I did here.
It’s worlds apart from the average breakup track with the empowering messages and the realism of the emotion; who is your biggest lyrical influence?
I love storytelling through lyrics. The lyrics that hit home the hardest with me are ones I feel speak directly to me, which the R&B genre tackles really well. It’s hard to pick the biggest influence, but I love Jazmin Sullivan and Summer Walker’s writing styles and how raw and honest their lyrics feel. I’m obsessed with Noah Cyrus’ writing too, she conveys so many of her feelings through such vivid metaphors.
Aside from other artists, what inspires you to write?
I’m mainly inspired by my experiences, some of which have been absolutely wild. When I struggle to express how I feel or even internally acknowledge it, writing is my outlet. I deal with some very heavy emotions at times, and writing can be a good escape. I’m also inspired by melodies, so a new beat from my brother is often the first way to get me writing.
What was it like to collaborate with your brother on the beats?
It was so fun. We have such a love for music that it’s surprising it even took so long for us to start making it together. He’s really incredible at what he does, so when I came to him with this song it didn’t take long for him to make the perfect beat to go with it. I always find that his beats totally elevate the songs, and working with someone who really understands your style and sound is such a blessing.
If you could change one thing in the world via your music what would it be?
There are so many injustices that I would change if I could. If I had to choose, I’d fix the homelessness and poverty crisis we’re facing. Shelter is a basic necessity, and it’s ridiculous that food and water is becoming so inaccessible to so many.
Is there a sophomore release in the pipeline?
Of course! I’m dropping the next single next month, so be on the lookout for that. It’s funny because I have so much music I’d love to just drop all at once, but I have to hold myself back and allow people to want more.
Any plans to take your music to the live arena?
I’d love to. Right now I’m focusing on building a catalogue so there’s more than one song to perform, and building a fanbase so there’s more than five people in the audience! But I am definitely going to be performing toward the latter end of the year.
