Basketball is one of the most popular sports across the continents. It has an American origin, and this is the reason why it is most likeable in the US. Sports enthusiasts spend hours on end glued to the TVs to watch the games while others flock to the courts to watch them live. The Origins

Basketball traces its origin to Springfield College in Massachusetts, which was formerly known as the International Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) Training School. It was invented in 1891 by James Naismith. He was a second-year graduate student and physical education instructor. The game was developed as an alternative sport for athletes to play indoors during the winter season. 

Naismith was asked by the school’s physical education superintendent, Luther Gulick, to come up with such a sport. The athletes were just from the vibrant football season and needed to expend the energy that was built up. The alternatives that were present were callisthenics and marching, which could not match up.

He leveraged his knowledge of lacrosse, football, rugby, and tag-and-toss to develop a ‘hybrid’ that went on to hit worldwide popularity. The aim was to create a simple yet captivating activity that was playable indoors by a team. It had to be safe enough to be played in an enclosed space since rugby and football would be catastrophic.

Naismith asked the janitor to create square boxes to act as goals, but then he came up with two baskets. They were nailed on the balcony rails on two extreme ends, which were approximately 10 feet high. He then invented the 13 original rules that governed the original game. 

Basketball caused a spectacle after a short time. The students enjoyed playing it and passed it to others through magazines and word of mouth. The rules were published and passed far through the YMCAs, which had a wide network. The First World War also enhanced its spread.

The Evolution

Initially, the game did not have a name. Someone suggested that it is called Naismith Game, but he thought it was too complex, so they settled for its current name. It was played using soccer balls, which made it impossible to dribble. The first real basketball was designed in 1894 by Naismith in conjunction with Spalding, but dribbling began in the 1920s. 

The basket has also undergone the evolution over time. The first one that was created by the janitor had a closed bottom. Hence, someone had to retrieve the ball from the basket for the game to proceed. In 1906, they started adopting backboards, metal hoops, and nets. The first slam dunk was executed by Robert Kurland in the 1940s. 

Another major difference is the nature of the game. It was rough and violent and not as civilized as it is now. Naismith admitted that at first, his students started kicking, tackling, and punching. The same trend continued as the game continued to spread. It was so rampant that it had to be played in a cage to prevent the players from falling on spectators. The game transitioned quickly and is currently being played in a range of courts, both indoor and outdoor. 

The nature of the game is also gentle. You may witness a few moments of madness, but it is nothing compared to the original idea. The game is governed by 10 rules with several articles and sub-sections as opposed to the 13 basic rules that guided the original game. However, there are striking similarities between the two.

History of Competitive Basketball

As aforementioned, basketball was played for fun until January 1892, when the first official match was played. Here is the journey that the game took to becoming a competitive sport:

1. The first recorded intercollegiate game was played in 1896 between the University of California and Stanford University.
2. In 1898, the National Basketball League was created.
3. The league was abolished in 1904.
4. In 1909, the first international match was played between Mayak Saint Petersburg and a YMCA American team.
5. In 1932, the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) was developed in Geneva by 8 countries.
6. In 1936, Basketball became an Olympic sport – Berlin Olympics.
7. In 1946, the Basketball Association of America (BAA) was created in New York.
8. In 1949, the BAA joined National Basketball League to form the National Basketball Association.

These are the milestones that have taken place in the history of competitive basketball. They played a huge role in making the sports activity what it is now. This is an amazing game with millions of fans across the globe. It has a rich and intriguing history that spans over centuries. The success of the sport currently is no surprise.
