If you’re anything like us here in the Vents offices, then you’re still probably catching your breath from the high-octane action fiesta back in late March which was the fourth chapter in the John Wick saga. Mystery, intrigue, laughs and a whole lot of fast and frenzied action punctuated the latest big screen effort and fans came a-flocking to catch what looked to be the finale for the beloved Keanu Reeves franchise. But as we all know, “final” in Hollywood is usually anything but, especially if you have a perennial fan-favorite moneymaker which shows no visible signs of slowing down. It was in that spirit that Lionsgate made a whole lotta folks happy just recently by officially announcing that a fifth outing for John Wick and Co. is forthcoming…
According to our A Walk In the Clouds fans over at the ever-relevant Hollywood Reporter, Keanu “Theodore Logan” Reeves is poised to return to his acclaimed role of John Wick after an astonishing $363 million global haul for the fourth film in the series.
During a Q4 earnings call last Thursday, Lionsgate Big Wheel Joe Drake made an entire world of action movie fans very happy when he revealed that, despite that ending in John Wick 4, Reeves would be suiting up for yet another Wick film in the near future (presumably as soon as a deal is worked out between the Hollywood studios and the Writers Guild to end the current writer’s strike).
“What is official is that, as you know, Ballerina is the first spinoff that comes out next year. We’re in development on three others, including five and including the television series, The Continental, which will be airing soon,” Drake teased. “We’re building out the world and when that 5 movie comes, it will be organic — will be organically grown out of how we’re starting to tell those stories. But you can rely on a regular cadence of John Wick.”
Details are still quite light on what iteration John Wick 5 would take: Will Chad Stahelski return to direct? Did John Wick fake his death? Will Lionsgate accept my unsolicited screenplay for a fifth Wick film (Hey, you can’t fault a guy for trying, wot)? Though the jury is still out on the health of everybody’s favorite assassin – though we’d wager a boatload of our The Last Time I Committed Suicide VHS copies that Reeves’ alter-ego miraculously got better – Stahelski has gone on the proverbial record about a new installment and whether he might return as the commander-in-chief of this very profitable ship.
“It’s very flattering for them to come back and, you know, say ‘We want more’ and it’s not just a cash grab. It’s legitimately the audience wants more,” Stahelski told The Hollywood Reporter a short time back. “I think we all need that little bit of time to go, ‘Whew. Let’s see what’s next.’ … If Keanu and I, a few months from now, sit down at a whiskey bar in Japan again and go, ‘Yep, we’ll never do another one of those,’ and then all of a sudden go, ‘Yeah, but I got an idea,’ we’re open to it.”
Stay tuned for what we’re sure is going to be much more news on the eventual John Wick 5 (and Happy Memorial Day for whichever part of the world you hang your fedora in, Dear and Constant Reader)!
