1.) We’re super-excited to be speaking today with acclaimed music artist Madisyn Shipman; greetings and salutations, Madisyn! Before we meander down the proverbial Q&A musical pathway, how goes your 2023 thus far?
Firstly, I want to express my gratitude, I’m so grateful to be able to speak with you guys today! My 2023 is going amazingly so far. This is going to be my year! So many projects are finally coming to a head and I’m so excited to share them all! I’ve put so much time and energy into creating over the past few years and this year is focused on putting it all out and sharing it with the world so I have no complaints! Just gratitude!
2.) Major congrats and kudos on the upcoming late May release of the new single Bitch Boy! What was the genesis of this catchy gem of a tune? Is there a VH1-Behind the Music story you could share on the song’s creation?
Thank you so much! All of my songs are written from stories and experiences that have had throughout my life and for Bitchboy specifically it’s about a relationship I was in where I was consistently undermined, this guy would gaslight me into feeling guilty over something I hadn’t even done. I took a trip to London with my parents and met up with two brother that I met through Nickelodeon when I was 12, there was no romantic history. But throughout the trip my boyfriend kept saying was I was cheating with the brothers. This was not the case at all! I told the boyfriend he had nothing to worry about but that wasn’t good enough for him, he resorted to calling and texting non stop and putting a damper on the trip. I can see now that guys act like this based on their own insecurities. All in all he was the bitch. For me, this song is about reclaiming my power. I’m so grateful to finally be able to share this with other people who may be able to relate!
3.) The music video for Bitch Boy is being released alongside the single. What was the shoot for the video like and did you have the final creative say on how the video came out?
I called all the shots with this video! I had a vision and I spoke with my director, Nayip Ramos about what that was and this video is what we landed on! I’m so happy with how it turned out! My dear friend Isaak Presley, who I’ve known since I was 12 is in the video as well so we really just played around on set and I think that shows! The video captures so many different sides of me (sexy, crazy, psycho, thriving and so much) and I’m really excited to see what everyone thinks!
4.) In your humble opinion, what differentiates the new single from anything else on the 2023 music scene?
This single and all my other songs are raw. They all come from my heart but that doesn’t mean they have to be sad or happy or fit into one box. I think so many people can relate to going through a bad relationship and this song is more fun, pop/rock influenced that even if you aren’t going through a breakup it’s still a song you can listen to for any mood!
5.) Can you introduce our ever-inquisitive readers to some of the other talented musicians that lent their musical alchemy to the making of the new single?
Bitchboy was a labor of love from Me, Myah Marie and Michael Blum! I am so grateful for both of them. Most of my songs are with them and I really value our open and honest relationship. Myah is a jack of all trades! She helps me write my music, does background vocals and harmonies but more importantly she is like my big sister and I can’t put into words how much she means to me! Michael is a insanely talented producer! He nails my creative vision to a T and he also kind of like a therapist but also like our missing piece. When Myah and I are writing we’re saying the craziest things and Michael will tell us we’re crazy but also say even crazier things that just egg us all on!
6.) Who was your producer on Bitch Boy and what did the collaboration between artist and producer look like in the studio?
Michael Blum produced! And I’ve worked with Michael for the past two years so he knows pretty much everything about my dating life! It’s great to be able to have a guys prospective when writing. As far as track goes he’s completely open to play around which I truly appreciate! Even if it’s just a final vocal performance day we still are constantly having a great time and telling stories which makes work not feel like work!
7.) Along with being a first-rate musical artist, you’re also widely known and respected for your work as an actress. How is the music industry similar to that of the world of film and television? How is it different?
Both acting and music are creative outlets for me. I act because I’m able to put myself in someone else’s shoes and with music I do it to get in my own shoes. I feel like acting is a passion but music is my therapy!
8.) Who inspires you musically?
Taylor Swift 100%. Taylor is such a wonderful storyteller and I truly look up to her. I caught the music bug from Taylor and really loved the fact she was talking about her life in her songs, and now I get to do the same! I don’t think I would be the same musical artist without her being an influence since I was 8!
9.) Word ‘round industry campfire has it that Bitch Boy is the first single off of your upcoming debut album. Can you give readers a hint or three as to what they can look forward to with this premiere LP?
The stories are true! I’m releasing an album! I went into these session beginning two years ago with a vision. I wanted to create an album that captures the stages of grief but in the form of a breakup. The sad, the angry, the manic and even the clarity that comes after. This album has at least one song for every feeling I have felt in a breakup. It was really important to me to truly show the rawness of my life in my music so that’s what I did!
10.) With all of this amazing new music on the way, can fans look forward to catching you on the touring/performing circuit in the coming weeks and months?
Although nothing is planned yet, going on tour and performing is a huge goal of mine. I really want to be able to give back to my fans and touring would be so fulfilling to me and my fans!
11.) At the end of the day, what do you hope listeners walk away with after giving many-a spin to Bitch Boy and the upcoming album?
I really hope that the listeners are able to realize they aren’t alone in anything. I know for me music is an outlet especially when I’m going through something like a breakup. Often times you scroll trying to find a song that describes something you’ve experienced and I wasn’t able to find that so I created it. My goal is for at least one person to be able to gain something from my songs. If that happens then it’s a win!
