Weekend Movie Recommendations: Roku Channel Edition

Have you seen Weird: The Al Yankovic Story? It’s quite good! It’s also available on the Roku Channel. If you get the Roku Channel (which is free, or at least free on Roku players at the very least), what other movies are there to watch? Well, a lot of horror movies, which makes sense. Those are cheap, easy to get the rights to, and also there are people who will watch any horror movie. I am not one of them. So, horror movies aside, here are a few films to watch on the Roku Channel.

WarGames is on there, and I just watched like 20 minutes of it the other day. I had seen it in full before, so it wasn’t like I was just dropping into some movie that was new to me. It’s a good ‘80s film, but also a very ‘80s Cold War movie. Matthew Broderick plays a kid who accidentally gets a computer revved up for nuclear war, and now it has to be stopped. A fun thriller aimed at a younger crowd, and it’s a good one.

Let’s ramp up the thriller element with the ‘90s action movie Ronin. Do you like car chases? This movie, starring Robert De Niro and Jean Reno, is loaded with some excellent car chases. Ronin is a gem of the solid action movie ilk. This was when De Niro was still giving good dramatic performances, and not just doing hit-or-miss comedy and bad dramatic work.

I’m going to end with a comedy, one that feels like a good watch later in the evening. Happy Gilmore is the best “Adam Sandler comedy,” which is to say a comedy built around Sandler’s comedic persona. He plays the titular Happy Gilmore. You likely know he plays a hockey player who becomes a golfer. I am not a fan of a lot of Sandler’s comedies, but I do think Happy Gilmore is good.

There are a few other good movies on the Roku Channel, and they are all free. With ads, but free. Check out Weird, and from there you can get some more value out of the streaming service.
