We’re excited to be speaking today with acclaimed singer and songwriter extraordinaire DYLVN; greetings and salutations, DYLVN! Before we dive into the Q&A mosh-pit, how goes your 2023 thus far?
All over the place, but awesome lol. Writing tons of music and meeting so many amazing people!
Congratulations on the new single Tell Them Stories! What was the genesis of this heartfelt gem? How did it come into being?
Thank you so much! Well it was the first day I met my friend John Samuel (producer of the song) and that next day I was headed to a wedding. Was talking about how much I love going to weddings and being there for the people I love. We ended up cookin this thing up and the rest is history.
Who was your producer on Tell Them Stories and what did the collaboration between artist and producer look like in the studio?
The menace himself John Samuel. The collaboration between us was as spicy as you could ever imagine spicy being. He’s amazing and always challenges me in the craziest ways. This song we left it all out there and John Samuel put his whole entire absolute soul into making this thing happen. All of our songs have continued to up in Scoville level so stock up on some milk. My homie Mike from 1Mind came into collaborate and helped get this song to another cool place. Love them both so much.
In your opinion, what differentiates Tell Them Stories from anything else on the 2023 music scene?
I’m DYLVN. I’ve come to realize what differentiates me and other artists (from other artists) is just to be yourself. Im weird af so gotta show that lol. I’m living in San Clemente, CA. I love to surf, be with friends, overthink, travel, and make music. My music emulates that and everything I’m going through always. It’s real and straight from the soul!
Can you introduce readers to some of the other talented musicians that lent their musical alchemy into making Tell Them Stories a reality?
Well captain JJ Catalyst did his insanely hot amazing work mixing this thing. He is absolutely insane and means the world to me. He has been the last person to touch all of these next records I got next; mixing them and putting them into a spot I’m comfortable sharing with you all. He deals with all my stupid thoughts of random noises I hear even when they don’t exist lol. The homie Ruairi O’Flaherty mastered this one and made this song as crisp as you could imagine without burning it one bit. They’re amazing.
How is Tell Them Stories similar to some of your past music such as Dust of Love? How is it different?
Dust Of Love I was desperate for love, this song I’m older, have grown as a person, more confident in who I am as an artist and as a human. This is me.
As a singer and songwriter, which comes first for you: The lyrics or the music?
The melody, I hum a lot of weird shiet and my subconscious seems to always have something it needs to spew out. I find the words after that… at least most of the time. The process definitely varies!
Who inspires you musically?
Various different group of artists. Been listening to a lot of Jack Harlow, Bob Marley, Benee, Post Malone, to name a few…Other than that I always had listened to Tom Petty, Rebelution, and Blink growing up… with genre being so widespread. I’ve honestly been so honed in on my life experience and going into sessions with no limits. My life experiences have definitely inspired me the most lately!
On the heels of the release of Tell Them Stories, can fans look forward to an EP or LP release from you in 2023?
AHHHH YA GET THE MILK READY like I said. June 23 the full length EP comin at ya like an all you can eat buffett of the hottest hot wings. If you don’t like spicy it’s ok I’ll still be your best friend.
What does your touring/performing dance card look like after the release of the new single?
Really hope to get some shows going asap thereafter. It’s where I can have a therapy session and let it all out. Have some plans in the works! As of now we’re planning to play a show in my hometown of San Clemente on the release date of the EP (June 23)
At the end of the day what do you hope listeners walk away with after giving many-a spin to Tell Them Stories?
Their day just to be a little bit better.
