I’ve done my ranking of every episode of a season of a TV show for many a sitcom. Now, though, how about a drama? I don’t watch as many dramas, but there is one recent drama I loved: Breaking Bad. As such, I have decided to bring my episode rankings to the world of Heisenberg. I start with season one, which will be truncated, as the writer’s strike kept it to seven episodes. It also kept Jesse Pinkman alive, so it’s all good.
7. “Pilot”
6. “Gray Matter”
5. “Cancer Man”
4. “Cat’s in the Bag…”
3. “…And the Bag’s in the River”
2. “A No Rough Stuff Type Deal”
1. “Crazy Handful of Nothin’”
I had to begin this ranking with “Pilot,” because here is the thing: I watched the pilot episode when it originally aired on AMC. I also turned it off, thinking the show wasn’t all that good. Yes, I gave up on Breaking Bad. It would not be until the third season I started watching it, catching up on DVD swiftly. Within that context, “Pilot” was watchable, but it is still the least of these seven episodes.
My top two are the final two episodes of the season, but in reverse order. They are the two Tuco episodes, and that isn’t a coincidence. The addition of Tuco really ratcheted up the intensity, and then Breaking Bad kept that intensity going from there on out, becoming maybe the most-exciting dramatic TV show ever.
