Hi Nova from Mashville, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
Hi, I’m doing great! Thank you so much for having me.
2. Can you talk to us more about your latest single “OK”?
Yes, of course. “OK” is about a loved one who is contemplating suicide, a subject most people are uncomfortable talking about. The message being conveyed is that it’s not only “OK” to talk about these feelings, but it’s important to do so. Talking about it saves lives.
3. The video seems like it was almost entirely taken in one shot! How was the filming process and walk us through the experience of filming the video?
Yes, the video was all shot in one take! This was accomplished by spending the first couple of hours on set painstakingly marking the shots, and choreographing everyone’s movements, so that we could get a clean take once filming started. Weeks prior to filming I’d mentioned to the director, Ben Samuels, that I really wanted to incorporate dance into the storyline, as dance is one of my first loves, and such a beautiful way to express emotion. Ben took my request to heart and hired an amazing dancer, Alexandre Barranco, who really helped bring the story to life. It was awesome to see how all of these different artistic components came together to deliver such a powerful and important message.
4. Can you describe the recording and writing process for “OK”?
“OK” was written by Marc Benjamin (Founder of Mashville), Valentin Fuhrer, and rapper Tyke T. When I first heard the song it really resonated with me, and I’m so thankful that the Mashville team trusted me with the lead vocals. “OK” is actually the song Mashville had me record as the final phase of my audition process; we ended up using a lot of the vocal tracks from my audition demo in the final mix because it sounded so raw and real.
5. May is ‘Mental Health Awareness Month’, is there anything in particular that leads you to speak up about mental health awareness?
Like so many people I’ve experienced trauma in my life; my dad died suddenly when I was 6 years old. I’ve also been in relationships with partners that were struggling with mental health issues (i.e, depression and suicidology). Now that I’m a young adult I recognize that my current struggles with anxiety have been in the making for years, but I wasn’t talking about it. I think it’s important when we’re given an opportunity and a platform (like Mashville) to share information that offers hope and builds human connection that it’s our responsibility to speak up.
6. Suicidal Ideation is something that can be particularly difficult to talk about, what inspired you to find the courage to dive into this subject?
According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness suicide is the second-leading cause of death among people 15 to 24 in the U.S., and there’s a misconception that talking about suicide will cause a person to kill themselves (or give them the idea). Research has shown this isn’t true and, in fact, has shown that asking someone if they are having thoughts of killing themselves is actually more likely to save a life.
7. Does the new single mean we can expect a new album or more new music? If so, how’s that coming along?
You should definitely be expecting lots of great new singles, and maybe even an EP! I’ve been in the studio a lot, and already have some hits ready to go. I can’t wait to release them all!
8. Any tentative release date or title in mind?
I really love the element of surprise, it’s more fun that way…
9. What else is happening next in Mashville’s world? Any live performances or touring coming up?
All of the artists in the collective will be performing on May 31st at Hotel Ziggy where we’ll be showcasing some unreleased originals, so we’re all really excited about that! As far as touring goes you’ll have to stay tuned for dates @mashvilleusa!
