INTERVIEW: COLT GRAVES

Colt Graves, welcome to VENTS! Can you tell us about your latest single, Dirt on Me?

“Dirt on Me” is the fifth song that I have released in the past 12 months. We have steadily been growing the streaming and sales numbers with each release, but this song has blown us away with its performance. We have been in the Top 5 on Amazon’s Country charts all week, and we made it to #13 on the iTunes Country charts.

Is there a story behind the single?

“Dirt on Me” is for the people living true to themselves, regardless of what anyone else has to say about it. The expression “throwin’ dirt” is associated with gossip, talking poorly about someone when they’re not around, and for lack of a better term, being a hater for no good reason.

I think the best thing we can do to keep our peace is just ignore what everyone else has to say and stay in our lane. If you try to please everyone, you end up pleasing no one, and it still comes at the cost of your own mental health.

It’s an eclectic mix of genres and styles; did this happen naturally?

When you grow up with Bluegrass, Rap, Blues, Pop, etc – weird things happen. I have learned to embrace my sound and I like that my music can bridge the gap between genres and be enjoyed by a variety of people with different music tastes.

Can you share any of the sage songwriting wisdom bestowed on you by your grandfather, Josh Graves?

My grandfather was a renowned Bluegrass musician and is in the hall of fame. The biggest thing I learned from my grandfather was that if I wanted to make music my career, I could do it. Just like him.

Did you feel the pressure growing up to be accomplished in your own right?

Not really. To date, the notoriety of my grandfather hasn’t been something that weighs on me. I have carved my own path and I am proud of what we have accomplished.

You were in multiple bands before establishing yourself as a solo artist; what inspired you to go solo?

I wanted to return to my roots as an artist and rebuild myself from the ground up. I returned home to a farm in Kentucky and just started writing and recording music that felt authentic to me and my story.

What’s next for Colt Graves?

My main goal is to grow my streams and sales to a level that will allow me to spend more of my time creating music and playing shows. We are prioritizing our live sound this year so that we can get out there and share my music across the U.S. and eventually the world.
