Vents is happy to be speaking today with acclaimed London-based synth/disco ensemble Spirits of Saturn; greetings and salutations, gang! Before we dive into the Q&A mosh-pit, could you all say ‘hi’ and introduce yourselves to our ever-inquisitive readers?
Hi Vents! We are Spirits Of Saturn. Thanks for having us. We’re four friends who met in London as early back as 2014. Most of the members met outside Buffalo Bar in Highbury & Islington. We’re a band today because we’ve stayed good friends over the years.
Congratulations on the brand-spankin’ new release of your debut single Feelings Agency! Edmund, what was the genesis of this beautiful new tune?
This song was a long instrumental jam that was recorded in Sydney, Australia when Early was living there. It was used in a short film Early was making from when we were in Brighton with another band where I played a detective that was undercover with the band trying to solve a case. But the detective is too into partying and the case remains unsolved. The film was pretty funny but just a bit of fun. The instrumental was made into Feelings Agency when Early moved back to London and we started this project.
Early Sans, what made Feelings Agency the perfect song to release as Spirits of Saturn’s debut single?
Feelings Agency felt like the perfect song to release as we thought it encapsulated our sound the best. We wanted the music to be hypnotic, danceable, and experimental but still have a catchy song at it’s backbone with big hooks and ear-worms.
Scott, who was the producer on Feelings Agency and what did that collaboration between band and producer look like in the studio?
Up to this point we haven’t had the opportunity or resources to work with a producer so it’s been all self produced.
Elian, what differentiates Feelings Agency from the Distinguished Competition on the 2023 music scene?
Feelings Agency and the band’s music in general stands out to me by not relying heavily on guitars and by being unabashedly melodic and celebratory. At the moment, I can only tell from playing London and the positive reaction we’ve had from friends and strangers alike but I sense a desire for escapism and leaving the last few years of restrictions behind which could be true around the world.
Edmund, word ‘round industry campfire has it that Spirits of Saturn has even more exciting music forthcoming for 2023! Can you give readers a hint or three as to what they can expect from these new music releases?
A slight deviation from Feelings Agency but with the same poptastic intentions.
Early Sans, on the heels of the debut single release, can fans look forward to seeing Spirits of Saturn on the touring/performing circuit in the coming weeks and months?
We’ve only just played our second show in London so we’re definitely working on playing some more.
Scott, how did Spirits of Saturn come together as the tight band that we hear on Feelings Agency? Is there a VH1-Behind the Music origins story you could share with us?
Me & Early met in 2014 when I posted on the Cave Club Facebook group that my friends weren’t coming to Cave Club that week and if anyone wanted to go together. Early replied saying he’d just moved to London and he’d come with me. When we met, we were both wearing polka dot shirts! So it was a great moment of synchronicity to kick start our friendship and makes our band “tight”.
A question for all of you: Who inspires you musically?
Definitely artists like Bowie, Roxy Music, and Scott Walker with their desire for reinvention and challenging boundaries.
Elian, what does the creative process between the members of Spirits of Saturn look like? Does everyone sort of throw-in creatively?
I was late to the party and joined the band on drums after the first batch of songs had already been written and recorded by Edmund and Early. After I joined, we started to meet for jams which sometimes ended in parties where we’d do complete renditions of Beatles albums which we bonded over. We ended up recording quite a few new songs from just meeting up most weeks. Oftentimes Edmund would come in with a melody or some words, then Early would find a beat and cool sounds and we’d all chip in from there to help shape the song up.
Edmund, at the end of the day what do you hope fans walk away with after giving a solid and good listen to Feelings Agency?
That it engages with them cathartically, evoking them to feel not only optimistic and inspired, but free and revitalised.
