Alternative Pop isn’t really my thing, let’s get that out of the way. Hearing Migrant Motel, however, is a different experience. The creativity that the duo of singer/bassist David Stewart Jr. and drummer Chava Ilizaliturri bring to their latest single “Party” makes the listener pay attention. It’s a can-do willingness to push the imaginative envelope that, above all else, distinguishes them from the pack. It’s propelled them to acclaim throughout Mexico, Latin America, and the United States. It’s also secured them plum spots playing in venerated venues such as Los Angeles’ The Roxy, The Viper Room, and has seen them sell out 3 local shows in March & April. I heard why when I listened to “Party” for the first time. These two are here to stay.

I am impressed most of all with the freewheeling confidence they show. Migrant Motel sound demonstrates the unflappable confidence of veteran musicians. “Party” comes off like they began the recording process for the song knowing exactly what they wanted and knowing how to achieve it. It’s admirable, as well, how they counter listener expectations. You come into this song thinking, at least in part, that two musicians writing a song about a party means we’re in for celebratory music making.
It isn’t the case, however. Opting to take a different route – we get a much more thoughtful tune, with heartache is the center of “Party”, but despair never undercuts the song’s energy. This is a duo who can’t help themselves; even the pain behind this song manifests itself in an energetic fashion. It isn’t that the tempo’s fast or the sonics overpowering, far from it, but there’s a surge I can feel from the outset. It holds your ears attention throughout.
Stewart’s vocals capitalize on the song’s potential. He has just enough gravitas to give the song added emotional weight yet keeps genuine pop music appeal. The balance helps deepen the track’s impact. He understands nuance as well. The light orchestrated quality of his singing keys into the rise and fall of the cut and brings its full weight to bear at the right points. The song’s video helps to emphasize that.
The “Party” video follows Chava and David around a room – and when its attention is focused on Stewart, he gives all of himself to the camera: he communicates palpable charisma. Chava is shown doing various activities throughout the clip and does a fine job conveying low-key energy. It’s as polished and considered of a video as anything you’ll see from marquee acts. There’s nothing DIY or low budget about the production.
