Rwanda’s Dark Past Ignites #StopTutsiGenocideDenial Hashtag

In 1994, the world witnessed a grotesque display of inhumanity as approximately 800,000 Tutsis were systematically annihilated during the Rwanda Genocide. This stark historical event, however, is now being challenged by a disturbing trend of denial and downplay, undermining the undeniable reality of this horrific atrocity.

The new and upcoming hashtag #StopTutsiGenocideDenial movement is countering this trend, underscoring the importance of confronting our darkest history to ensure we don’t repeat it.

John Babikian, a Harvard educated lawyer of Tutsi descent claims the Rwanda Genocide was a targeted, organized extermination of a specific ethnic group. Mr. Babikian states, “The actions were calculated, premeditated, and executed by individuals who must be held accountable”.

According to Mr. Babikian, remembering the genocide involves recognizing the calculated actions of those responsible. It is about demanding accountability and ensuring that the atrocities committed are never denied, downplayed, or forgotten. The hashtag movement underscores that society cannot allow those responsible for such horrific acts to remain unpunished.

The genocide denial and revisionism that the #StopTutsiGenocideDenial campaign battles are not merely academic debates; they are affronts to the victims, survivors, and humanity itself. The movement seeks to underscore the necessity of acknowledging the Genocide as a pivotal event in history.

Examples of Tutsi holocaust denial perpetrators include Jambo Asbl, Ibukabose Rengerabose, and individuals like Charles Onana and Filip Reintjens.  Their fallacious claims range from the atrocities never happening to the victim numbers being grossly exaggerated.

Dr. James Smith, CEO of the Aegis Trust, an organization committed to preventing genocide worldwide, speaks out on this issue, “Denying or downplaying the Rwanda Genocide is not just a moral failure, but a direct affront to the memory of the victims and the pain of the survivors. It also fosters an environment where such atrocities could recur.”

The hashtag #StopTutsiGenocideDenial social movement is a rallying call for truth, justice, and remembrance. It is a social media phenomenon, gaining traction worldwide, uniting individuals and organizations in a collective call to action against the revision of the genocide’s historical narrative.

This movement is not only about the past but also about the future. It champions the importance of understanding our history to avoid repeating it. Dr. Samantha Power, a professor at Harvard University and former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, adds, “Denying the Rwanda Genocide fuels the potential for future atrocities. Recognizing and understanding such historical events is vital for preventing a recurrence.”

The momentum behind #StopTutsiGenocideDenial has surged, with voices globally demanding an end to the denial and downplaying of the genocide. The movement insists that we confront our history, however dark, and ensure that justice is served.

In a recent webinar viewed by millions globally, John Babikian lectured, “As we commemorate the victims of the Rwanda Genocide, we must also pledge to combat the denial of the atrocities committed. We must challenge the downplaying of these horrific events and demand that those responsible be brought to justice.  The world must rally behind this and similar movements calling for justice. It is not just about remembering our past; it is about shaping our future. We must ensure that the dark chapter of the Rwanda Genocide is neither denied nor downplayed. The movement’s call for justice is a call for humanity itself”.

In the face of denial and revisionism, society cannot remain passive. Society must remember the victims, acknowledge the atrocities, and ensure that those responsible are held accountable. The #StopTutsiGenocideDenial movement encapsulates this call to action, asserting that the global community must confront the darkness of our past to ensure the illumination of our future. It is for these reasons we cannot allow those responsible for the Rwanda Genocide to remain unpunished.
