AKITA, a band influenced by funk legends like Lettuce and Earth, Wind & Fire, has released their new album, For The Night. The record has gained traction in streaming and features a refreshing party atmosphere. Introducing tracks like “Now or Never,” “Bet,” “Magic Market,” “Shine Down,” “Tiger Claw,” and “The Way It Is,” the group has evolved in their sound and production quality, with the main ingredient of their songs being the “funk groove.”
During our interview, the band members revealed that while they had written 18 songs, only eight made it onto the album. AKITA also shared upcoming summer performances where they will showcase the raw energy and fine-tuned musical structure of their live shows, killer solos, mediocre dancing, and overall good vibes and great times.

For The Night has officially been released, and it’s always exciting to share new songs with the fans. How has the feedback been so far? Do you find the process of putting out music to be more challenging than creating the album itself?
It’s pretty cool that the music seems to have gained traction in streaming. It’s always exciting to see those numbers going up. Putting the music out definitely calls for a different mind set than jamming and then carving a song out of it. There are a few similarities when you’re talking about marketing and promotion. We get to throw our creative juices into new areas, like new merch, social media posts, stuff like that.

You wrote a total of 18 songs for For The Night, but only eight of them made it onto the album. Do you have any plans to release the remaining songs as singles in the future, or do you think you might incorporate them into another album down the line?
Those ideas are still around and will likely get revisited but on the other hand, we are constantly creating new material and picking the best from it. On a recent road trip, we were listening to all the ideas we had in our Rehearsal Audio folder and picked tunes we thought could get another look.
Given your music’s lively and upbeat nature, how do you envision your fans connecting with For The Night, and what emotions or experiences do you hope they will take away from the album? What do you want people to feel and remember after listening to your latest release?
Our take on the “Night” theme still revolves around a party atmosphere mixed with a refreshing feeling, some new songs to make new memories with. Hopefully, people will hear that essence of fun we’ve put into everything we do and go away looking for their own nighttime fun, whether it’s a dance club or good friend’s backyard.
As a band with a large and diverse membership, how do you ensure that your different perspectives and creative approaches come together to form a cohesive sound? How do you maintain strong relationships with each other amidst the various challenges of being in a group and the ever-evolving music industry?
We allow all voices to be heard and we go with the best solutions. Not all ideas make the cut and we are all aware and ok with that. All the ideas and opinions can turn moments during practice into chaos but with the advantage that we’re rarely short of ideas. And because there are so many different influences in the band members, the ideas are pretty diverse and lets us explore so many different musical vibes.
While it’s clear that your music is heavily influenced by funk legends like Lettuce and Earth, Wind & Fire, we’re curious to know what other genres or artists have inspired your music. How have these inspirations influenced your sound, and what elements have you incorporated into your music as a result?
This one really depends on who you ask! Our keyboardist Tomi is influenced by rock, Latin, metal and reggae music whereas our vocalist Ade has an affinity for Jazz and RnB. Other influences include house music, motown and classic rock. Elements of those genres are woven into the core funk music of AKITA. The various genres can be heard from song to song, riff to riff, or even from instrument to instrument.
As a band with three albums to your credit, how do you perceive the evolution of AKITA’s sound over the years? What changes have you made to your approach to music-making, and what elements have remained constant throughout your career? How do you think your sound will evolve in the future?
The band has come a long way in the last few years in our song writing but also the production quality of our sound in the studio, which you can really hear throughout our 3 albums. The main ingredient of our songs will continue to be the funk groove with a side of songs that will sway towards other genres. Our options have really opened up by incorporating more sounds and effects to our music, like our horn section singing more back up vocals and there are more cooperative efforts in writing lyrics. Not to mention each member is also getting better technically and at filling their role musically in the songs.
You have a number of upcoming shows in the coming months. Are there any particular summer performances that you’re especially excited about? Can you give us a glimpse of what fans can expect from these shows?
Judging by our first couple shows in Florida recently, I think all of us are pretty excited to get out in front of new audiences and road-test the music. We’re blessed to have a pretty solid base of support here in Charlotte so it’s easy to think everything you do is great with that kind of energy at your back. But when we get in front of that group of folks who probably only know us by a name on a poster, we get that excitement to really show people what we’re all about. Fans can expect to hear the raw energy that AKITA brings to live shows with our fine tuned musical structure, killer solos, mediocre dancing, and overall good vibes and great times from our shows!
