Outright betting: Why do bettors prefer long-term wagers?

Punters often wonder whether it is best to place a pre-game bet, a live bet, or a future bet. Futures -known as outright bets – are in fact becoming more and more popular lately as bookmakers like those offering online betting in the Philippines, are giving a lot of emphasis and are putting a lot of effort into making this market one of the most attractive and lucrative ones for bettors.

Sports betting is all about predicting sports’ results and sports’ games outcomes. Who will win a certain football match (match bet), who is going to score the first goal (prop bet), what will be the total score in a given match (over/under bet) and so many more results both game and non-game related ones.

Besides the pre-game bets, sports betting is also about live wagers. Punters can place their bets during a sporting event, as a game unfolds and while they watch a match live, sensing all the heat and all the action.

Outright betting: how it works

But what is gaining more and more ground in the last years is future betting or simply put, outright betting. Outright betting has to do with placing a bet on the outcome of a competition, tournament, or league instead of a single game or match.

Bettors predict an outcome that has to do with how the event ends – the Champions League winner, the NFL Super Bowl winner, the FIFA World Cup winner, the N** winner, the F1 winner, the Wimbledon or Roland Garros winner and the list goes on and on. Or even, bettors predict another tournament or competition outcome such as the three clubs to relegate or the top three to move up the league.

In short, outright betting has to do with long-term results. And this is what distinguishes future betting from pre-game betting.

What makes outright betting so special?

Why do professional bettors prefer outright betting? What is it that makes outright betting such an appealing option for punters?

There are three main reasons why bettors prefer to bet on the outright results of an event.

1. Outright betting generally offers value

Although this is not always the case, for its most part outright betting offers value. How is that? Just consider that you can place a wager on a football club to win the EPL at the end of the season, by locking in the value of odds offered in advance.

Simply put, think of betting on Manchester City before even the league begins when bookies might have misrated the club’s dynamics this year, while you are almost certain that they are going to do it. With an outright bet, you lock a value, which is very likely to diminish as the league develops and the matches unfold, and as we move deeper into the league.

2. Outright betting gives you time to adjust your strategy

Let’s say your predictions for the winner of the Australia Open seem to fail and there are increased chances of you losing the outright bet you placed before the tournament began. As you see how things are going in the different games and as you get to watch your tennis player during the tournament, you have time to make the necessary adjustments.

You can hedge an outright bet or even cash out. Two very useful options for minimizing losses and generally reducing your exposure to risks. With hedge betting you can wager on the other side of your outright bet, while with cashing out you can limit your losses before you end up losing everything.

3. Outright betting demands patience, but it is the ultimate demonstration of one’s betting skills

Bettors often want to verify and appraise themselves for their betting skills. And while pre-game betting or in-play betting can generally offer more entertainment and fun to punters, their ego and self-confidence are largely injected by success in outright betting.

There is a lot of patience needed and bettors have to be more self-preserved in resisting cashing out or hedging an outright bet when things don’t seem to be so good. But succeeding in placing outright bets and getting profits from long-term wagers is really intriguing and enticing and above all is reassuring for one’s ability to make accurate predictions and one’s betting skills.
