INTERVIEW: Katrina Weidman

1. We’re super-excited to be speaking with our special guest Katrina Weidman whom many of you might know from her acclaimed work in the field of the paranormal. What you might not know is that along with her investigations into the paranormal, Katrina is also a super-talented singer and songwriter with a brand-spankin’ new song set for release; greetings and salutations, Katrina! Before we mosey on down the proverbial Q&A pathway, how goes your 2023 thus far?

2023 came in swinging! I think it’s still swinging. I would like it not to swing so much, but there are some really exciting things on the horizon so I’m focusing on those.

2. Major congratulations on the release of your debut solo project, the absolutely brilliant single Suffer Me! What was the genesis of this gem of a tune? How did it come into being?

I had something kind of similar that I wrote months before I wrote Suffer Me. I had put it away because I didn’t love the direction it was going in. Then during a late night/early morning session at my keyboard Suffer Me was born. It just kind of came out very organically. I kept playing and writing it that night. Soon after I sent it to Barb Morrison (producer) and they said, “Can we please record this one?” They got no argument from me. Lyrically, it’s very much a personal song. I actually didn’t fully know what I wrote about until 6 months after I wrote it.

3. Who was your producer on Suffer Me and what did the collaboration between artist and producer look like in the studio?

Barb Morrison was the producer of Suffer Me. It was pretty seamless. I had played the song for Barb and I knew the vibe I wanted to go with. I knew what I heard in my head, but didn’t know how to contextualize that for Barb. Barb and I talked it out, they are great at analyzing my music without letting me know they’re analyzing it so I feel pretty open with them when explaining what a song is about. Barb brought the vision to life.

4. For fans that might only know you through your paranormal research, how would you describe your style of music?

It’s pop, but a lot of my upcoming music definitely has a darker feel to it (could potentially be a side-effect from spending a TON of time in haunted houses).

5. Can audiophiles look forward to an EP or LP release from you sometime in 2023?

An EP, YES, this summer

6. As that rare bird known as a singer and songwriter, which generally comes first for you when working on a new tune: The lyrics or the music?

I would say 85% of the time the music comes first. The rest of the time, I’ve dreamed of melodies and their lyrics or I’ll be out running errands and I’ll hear a new melody and lyrics in my head. So sometimes they are born at the same time.

7. You’ve established a tremendous following as the lead singer for the Alt-Rock band Away From 30. Is there a VH1-Behind the Music story on how you landed in that enviable spot?

There’s no BTM story. We went our separate ways in 2018.

8. At the end of the day, what do you hope listeners walk away with after giving Suffer Me many-a spins on their respective turn tables?

At the end of the day, I would hope that a listener feels connected to it, that they feel something when they hear it.

9. On the heels of the release of Suffer Me, can we look forward to seeing you on the performing/touring circuit?

I think that’s definitely in the future

10. Who inspires you musically?

A ton of people, but I would say my biggest musical influence would be Tori Amos. I remember my friend introduced me to her music when we were kids and it was an instant connection. I had never really heard music like hers or a voice like hers before. Being a piano player, I started to learn as many songs as I could from her catalog. Little Earthquakes is still in my top three favorite albums

11. Final – SILLY! – Question: I’d be remiss to not ask you this – My wife and I absolutely LOVED you and Nick Groff in the three phenomenal seasons of Paranormal Lockdown; watching the episodes via streaming really got us through a difficult time, so a belated thank you! Can hard-core paranormal nerds such as my wife and I hold out any hope of an eventual reunion series between you and Nick? You really had great chemistry!

Thank you so much! I’m really very touched that it was there for you during a hard time. Reunion shows seem to be especially popular these days so you never know!

*Side note- If you were looking for more of that series there’s a 4th season! I think it was labeled differently, but it was 10 episodes all shot in the UK. There was also a Halloween special called The Black Monk House or 30 East Drive (depending on what country it aired in). All 11 of those are pretty fun because of the history and we had some really compelling experiences!
