Plans for New Series of “Star Wars” Movies Revealed

By 2020, the latest news of yet another Star Wars project seemed like an almost daily occurrence and in some cases box-office fatigue or television malaise had begun to set in. To their good credit, Disney pulled back on some of their pipeline plans for the kingdom which George Lucas had single handedly created lo those many years back, with a greater care put into the quality of the franchise versus the quantity. That plan to take their respective mouse-sized shoes off of the Star Wars gas pedal might just have turned the trick, as our Special Edition fanatics over at The Hollywood Reporter revealed this very day.

As revealed by Lucasfilm Big Wheel Kathleen Kennedy, at least three new chapters in the Star Wars saga are silver screen-bound with some mighty big talent involved in the production of these fan-favorite films.

Super-star talents James Mangold (Walk the Line, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny), Dave Filoni and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy will each direct a new Star Wars movie, it was revealed during the annual Star Wars Celebration event in London, England. And as exciting as it was to hear that announcement, it is probably a safe bet to say that the true show-stopper was the big reveal that actress Daisy Ridley was making a triumphant return to that galaxy far, far away in Obaid-Chinoy’s Star Wars entry.

The big coup other than Ridley’s return to the franchise seems to be that of acclaimed and very much in-demand director James Mangold and his first foray into the worlds of Death Stars and exotic alien planets. Mangold explained that his take on the series would be a “Biblical epic” and is set to take place in the distant past. Said past (a mere 25, 000 years away from the movies and TV shows of the franchise) will take a hard look at the murky beginnings of The Force, giving the creative visionary ample elbow room to work and weave his own unique magic.

“When I first started talking to Kathy about doing one of these pictures, what occurred to me was thinking about what kind of genre of movie within Star Wars I wanted to do,” explained Mangold. “And I thought about a Biblical epic, like a Ten Commandments, about the dawning of the Force. Where did the Force come from, when did we discover it, when did we learn how to use it?”

As for Obaid-Chinoy, his film is prepping to take place fifteen years after the Rise of Skywalker and sounds as if it will be a true legacy type of sequel. Meanwhile, Filoni’s efforts are said to be set in the time of the uber-popular Star Wars TV series The Mandalorian.

Returning actress Daisy Ridley carefully kept her Rey playing cards close, not revealing too much and only saying that she “was thrilled to be continuing this journey.”

We’ll keep everyone posted on any and all new information on these trio of Star Wars films as they become known to us!

Here’s to the triumphant return of the Star Wars film franchise – Long may The Force be strong with it!
