Nicky Rubin Releases “Beautiful”

As a teenager running from the melancholic skies of Manchester, Nicky Rubin hitch-hiked to the hills of  Afghanistan, the Indian subcontinent and beyond. On his travels he was given a beat up old guitar and began writing his first songs on the streets of Teheran.

Many moons and miles on, Nicky is now based in London. A seasoned veteran of the stage, Nicky’s life has been devoted to performing his emotionally charged songs around the world. An enigmatic songwriter who’s varied musical influences include the classics:  Beatles, Stones, U2, and Springsteen.

On Beautiful, he writes:

“Written in Kiev Metro going up one of the world’s deepest Underground escalators. Morning in the Kiev subway. Possibly a little hung over after a few too many vodkas the night before. You see a sight that could change your world. But do you approach? The predator within you answers to the call. Shyness overcomes you. You wait. Hesitate. She gets off. You’ve missed your chance. The fear of rejection and the sly laughter of those watching you being rejected. So when a small guy chats up an enormous Ukrainian goddess, it’s like – “Hey!  You like Tiger or Giraffe?” That’ll make her laugh. You’re half way there! Now you’ve just gotta watch your wallet!”

The essence of Nicky’s song writing is reflected in the title of his first album War and Peace, one which encapsulates his personality perfectly. Although the content may have changed, the soulful approach remains the same. Two sides of the same coin; the anger the sadness, the violence the calm, and the loneliness interspersed with rare moments of joy.

His album, Drums is out in May.
