If you’re any real fan of cinema – and we have a hunch that you are if you’re reading this article – then surely the most eagerly anticipated film of 2023 has to be legendary director Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon. Setting aside that we here at Vents would show up for a twelve hour marathon of Scorsese reading the 1946 Brooklyn telephone book (like you wouldn’t?), this epic story which is based off of wordsmith David Grann’s true crime book of the same name features some of the very best actors that the entertainment industry has ever churned out: Robert De Niro, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jesse Plemons, Brendan Fraser, John Lithgow, Lily Gladstone and Tantoo Cardinal among others. It’s a safe bet that film nerds the world over are salivating at that combined talent under the stewardship of such a master director as Scorsese.
Since Killers of the Flower Moon was first announced as Martin Scorsese’s latest feature film, the big question on everyone’s minds was when exactly it would be released. Seeing as how this is an Apple picture (along with co-partner Paramount), the next big question after a release date was whether or not the fiilm would split the difference on release day with a simultaneous theatrical and streaming premiere? Those questions were answered just the other day courtesy of our After Hours fanatics over at the esteemed Hollywood Reporter and we’re here to bring you some long-deserved answers, Dear and Constant Reader…
Killers of the Flower Moon has been announced as having a limited theatrical opening on Friday, October 6 followed by a wide opening a mere two weeks later on October 20. Sometime shortly after that, the film from the acclaimed director of Mean Streets and Raging Bull will meander onto Apple TV+ for a global streaming premiere.
For anyone not following the plot particulars of Killers of the Flower Moon, the story is thus: Set in Oklahoma during the dog days of the Roaring 1920s, the movie follows an FBI investigation into the mysterious deaths of members of the Osage tribe which not so coincidentally comes shortly after the discovery of oil on their land. In a turn that might not surprise longtime admirers of DiCaprio, the Don’t Look Up star plays one of the central Big Bads in the film. Studios reportedly originally wanted DiCaprio as one of the FBI agents on the trail of the killer (or killers). After DiCaprio balked at that prospect, Scorsese’s The Irishman star Jesse Plemons took over the role; everyone’s a winner!
Save the date and we’ll see you in line on October 6, 2023 for Killers of the Flower Moon!
