INTERVIEW: Outlaw Singer Songwriter Beau Nair

1.) We’re happy to be speaking today with acclaimed singer-songwriter and musical visionary Beau Nair; greetings and salutations, Beau! Before we meander down the harmonic Q&A pathway, how has your New Year been treating you thus far?

It’s been fantastic, I gotta say. I just finished mixing my next album and it feels really great to finally launch it off into the universe.

2.) Congrats on the brand-spankin’ new release of your gem of an album Appetite For Seduction! What was the genesis of this remarkable album?

Since last summer, I have released an album a month for nine months in a row, a feat unequaled in any genre. Appetite for Seduction might be my most erotic album yet, as far as subject matter goes. It’s part of the journey I embarked on when the pandemic hit and I went into lockdown in my cabin studio. These songs poured forth from my fertile imagination like a waterfall of wonderfulness. Some of my favorite songs yet appear on this delightful platter and my fans have eaten it all up.

3.) One of the remarkable things about Appetite For Seduction is that it’s your eighth album in eight months! What was the impetus in setting such an ambitious release schedule?

Sometimes, we rise to greatness on a level we didn’t know we were aspiring to. When I started writing my first album Truth or Nair, I had no idea that it would start a cavalcade of songs that flowed like an avalanche from my mind. I could barely keep up recording them as I kept writing new ones. When I realized what was happening, I decided to embark on this nine-album journey to see if I could complete this mind-blowing mission. I’d say I have accomplished what I set out to do and set myself up for the next phase of my career. This catalog is now ready for some hot live action.

4.) How is Appetite For Seduction similar to your prior albums? How is it different?

When I was in lockdown during the pandemic, there came a point where my lack of female companionship had fermented my loins to a froth. Where better to work out my randy heart than in my songs? By album number 8, I was yearning for romance, love and human touch in a big way. And so, my appetite overcame me and this batch of songs began to tumble out, one funky nugget after another. Maybe it will help some lonely people out there find their soul mate. Or just grow giant forearms like Popeye.

5.) Can odds-makers and fans alike expect a ninth album from you next month, or is your release pattern a little less structured than that?

I have finished mixing album number 9 and it was a doozy! Most of my records clock in around a dozen songs but this one turned into a double, much to my own surprise. Though I had written the basic dozen or so at the end of my lockdown, some more gems poured forth and demanded to be added. And so, Life is Beautiful grew to the stunning 22-song collection it is. While I am fond of all my albums, I feel like this is my best one yet as far as songwriting goes. It has more hooks than a tackle box!

6.) You’re rightly celebrated as an artist who takes the bull by the horns as far as producing, mixing and mastering your own music. Would you ever consider bringing in an outside producer for example for a future album, or are you more comfortable controlling your own sound?

Now that I have identified my sound and created this catalog, I’d be more open to working with an outside producer if I felt they truly understood me and my music. Taking this all to a higher level is what I’m all about. My self-production came out of both necessity and circumstance, as I was on a solo journey to discover the very essence of who I have now become. I see myself more in the realm of Prince, as no one knows my vision as well as I do. And I can play the heck out of all the instruments myself, which helps.

7.) In your humble opinion, what differentiates Appetite For Seduction from anything else on the 2023 music landscape?

Well, I mostly hang in the country realm, though my music has a thick, meaty vein of pure funk running through it. Compared to modern country, I am an outlaw and a scoundrel who is willing to buck the system to be my own kind of artist. Modern country feels like trying to squeeze into a narrow box. Sounds like a coffin to me. My music will shake your booty while penetrating your mind with lyrics that constantly challenge your most delicate sensibilities. I ain’t for the faint of heart but I am loaded up with earworms you’ll never forget!

8.) For anyone reading this that might not be familiar with your sound, how would you describe the music which you create?

The term I created for my music is Funktry, the perfect marriage of funk and country. You simply cannot fake the funk. Modern country is bereft of any funkiness whatsoever, with all the auto tuning and whatnot. My music is raw, with live bass and piano taking the lead and giving you what you need.

9.) Who inspires you musically?

That’s a question with an endless answer. My heroes on piano, bass, vocals and songwriting would be a long list of legendary luminaries, some more on the obscure side these days. My boogie woogie piano playing might touch on Roosevelt Sykes while my bass playing might delve into Wilbur Bascomb territory. The only thing that doesn’t inspire me is modern country music, which is why I’m out to change the game and bring the goods.

10.) Early on you mastered the bass guitar, an instrument which gave fledgling Country star Waylon Jennings fits of anxiety in early ‘59 when backing Buddy Holly on tour. What’s the secret to successful bass guitar playing and does it still hold a special place in your heart?

Aside from piano, bass guitar has always been a love of mine. I never had anxiety about playing the bass, as it’s always felt natural in my hands. I think there’s a lot of crossover in how I play the piano and how I approach the bass. The secret is really no secret at all~ my ears, mind and fingers have spent a lifetime digging in to quality music. I’ve played with some amazing drummers as well, which always helps master the pocket. Most bass players try to hold down the bottom and provide foundation, which is always admirable when serving the song. Often, it’s at the expense of all the cool stuff you can play all over the neck, which is why I both hold down a serious bottom end and funk it up all over the place. My kind of playing involves going for it to the max and leaving no booty unfunked. The proof is in the pudding.

11.) Can fans look forward to seeing you on the touring circuit in the coming weeks and months?

I sure hope so. I’ve started putting a band together but it’s been tougher than I imagined finding harmony singers to join me. There must be a few choice singers out there with the boldness to sing these songs. Once I find them, it’s game on. The stage is where I shine and I can’t wait to get out there and show y’all how real this is gonna get! In the meantime, you have nine golden albums to absorb with your mind, heart and of course, your big ol’ booty. Oh yea
