1. What inspired you to create music with a combination of confessional art-rock, trip-hop, and film soundtracks?
At the time I was listening to a lot of Lana Del Rey, and was also drawn to dramatic cinematic music you’d hear in films. The more I learned about Lana’s music I found out she was using a lot of trip hop in her music and that inspired me as well. The confessional Art Rock title someone coined my music after hearing what they called “ a little something different that what currently was being released by pop stars. It fell into a different category. I guess it has to do with my lyrical expression almost like Sylvia Plath in my song Bathin’ in Your Garbage, and my story telling with theatrical & Rock undertones.
2. How has living in Europe for 3 years impacted your music?
Living in Europe was an unexpected period of growth for me . As much as I was excited to be in another country, I struggled a lot with no friends around and a husband that mostly travelled. I was really lonely but took that time and spent most days, all day, writing and creating. I was fully embraced with no distractions that we have here in LA and I found myself in the process and what I was about. I found an identity for my music. I happened to write a lot of sad songs while I was there but it was a beautiful era.
3. What is the process like for you when writing songs with provocative and thoughtful lyrics?
I’m a very sensual and extremely thoughtful person of other peoples feelings and viewpoints and I think that comes through in my music. I like slow like molasses lyrics that you really have too think about because I like to make people think when they’re listening to my music.
4. What do you think sets your music apart from other artists in the industry?
I’m a little bit of everything, something you can quite put your finger on. My music may fall under the Pop umbrella, but I’m very alternative at times, I have folk and soul tones, and can even sing country quite well. I’m a bit of a chameleon lol. And I don’t follow trends, I stick with what feels right for me and I know the right people will be attracted to it.
5. What do you hope your fans take away from your music?
To hear in my music maybe something they are struggling with so we have a connection. I hope they feel empowered my lyrics and ways of expression that it will be alright in the end.
