INTERVIEW: Struck/Down

Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hi guys, thanks for having us. A bit hungry really!

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “The Enforcer”?

It’s largely written along the continuation of the story of Father Bernard from our last EP. Father Bernard is a possessed priest from the 1500s when he was sent to rid Wookiee Hole of its demon. The enforcer is meant to reflect an everyday man with potential to make change that he’s not aware of and then becomes enlightened to his potential. The enforcer is a character manipulated by father Bernard into doing his bidding.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

The Enforcer was inspired by how we’ve all been divided by various media. Unfortunately to the point that we don’t believe in our own communities’ capacity to enforce change that would positively impact people’s quality of life.

How was the filming process and experience behind the video?

The filming process we was hoping to keep the DIY approach as we found success with it on our previous EP. We wanted to increase our production value so sought help from our friend Guerilla Pest and took a step away from DIY. Ian at Creek side boxing club was kind enough to allow us to use their facilities to shoot the video, they do great work in the local community so we wanted to help highlight that as well. We got it all done in a day, but we were all feeling a bit worse for wear as we’d been gigging in Southend the day before.

The single comes off your new EP To Witches – what’s the story behind the title?

‘From Demons..’ was a hint to previous songs we’d written before that touched on the inner demons we all struggle with. To witches is a continuation of the story we’d begun with Father Bernard as the vessel for these demons.

How was the recording and writing process?

It was mainly written in the rehearsal room and then refined at our home studios. When Will and Pete joined they then added their own tweaks and pulled together the songs. Tommy did his drum takes on his own and we tracked the guitars and bass at Pete’s house with him overseeing the process. In January I went into the studio with Ian Sadler (mix and master engineer) where he coaxed the best performance out of myself and added some final creative input. He had a great way of letting me express my uniqueness.

What role does Canterbury play in your music?

The dark medieval history of Canterbury has always fuelled our creativity, especially when it comes to the more fantasy based writing. The Canterbury metal scene also resonates with our sound as there’s a large doom/ groove following.

Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?

Largely it’s influenced by whatever feeling I have in my mind at that moment. I find that the riff has an emotion or pace to it that resonates with me and from there words fall onto the page.

What else is happening next in STRUCK/DOWN’s world?

We’re always writing and preparing for our next gig hoping it’s bigger and better than the last. We’re aiming to get more around the country this year compared to previous years and ultimately showcase our sound and expand our fan base. Keep in touch at www.facebook.com/StruckDownUK .
