We’re happy to be speaking today with acclaimed Multi-disciplinary artist extraordinaire Alexa San Roman; greetings and salutations, Alexa! Before we dive into the proverbial Q&A mosh-pit, how is your New Year treating you?
Very very well! No complaints here, thank you for taking the time to talk with me- lots of exciting things ahead this year
-Congratulations on your upcoming February 24gem of a single Get Free! Was it at all intimidating to cover The Vines for this new release?
Thank you! Yes extremely intimidating haha but I’ve loved this song for so long and I just always imagined a world where I was the one playing that sick guitar lead. I also never felt like I could pull off singing the entire song so bringing cunio in on this one helped me figure out how to make it work for me.
-Who was your producer on Get Free and what did the collaboration between artist and producer look like in the studio?
We worked with Anthony Lopardo at Westfall Recording Studio on this one. Anthony and I go way back to 2012 so anytime we get a chance to work together in the studio it’s always a lot of fun and very comfortable.
-Have you gotten or sought out any feedback from The Vines on your amazing cover of Get Free?
Haha! No I really just wanted to do this song because of the nostalgic feeling it gives me. If any member of the vines saw it I definitely would think that was really cool…& I know 15 year old Alexa would think it was REALLY cool.
-What was it like to collaborate with Cunio and Jacob Umansky on Get Free?
It was amazing. They’re both super professional and showed up to the studio and the video shoot super prepared but also not taking things too seriously. I think it was refreshing for us all to step outside our own respective musical projects to make this random cover collaboration together. All of our chemistry together was so natural and the video shoot was so easy to sail through.
-At the end of the day, what do you hope listeners walk away with after giving Get Free copious spins on their respective turn-tables?
I hope maybe some people who have never heard the original can connect with our version and we can play a part in introducing people to a great song that played a big role in my adolescence.
-On the heels of the February 24 release of Get Free can fans look forward to seeing you on the touring circuit?
2023 is definitely the year of playing live!! No tours yet but for sure starting slow with some NY shows is step one. From there I am definitely open to touring if the right opportunity presents itself.
-Your 2022 debut album Messy was hands-down one of the best premiere albums by any artist in what feels like forever. Were you prepared for the avalanche of accolades and praise which you received from fans and critics alike on this lovely album?
I was definitely taken back by the response to the record. It had been so long since I released music that I didn’t realize how many people were silently waiting in the wings for me to drop more music. So when I actually did the amount of people commenting and messaging me was extremely humbling. So … no I was no prepared lol
-Who inspires you musically?
So many artists it feels like an unfair question! My range of inspiration is so broad, from Ella Fitzgerald to Death Cab for Cutie to KISS.
-Have you already started prepping for a sophomore album for this year or the next?
Not sure about an album yet but for sure some new singles. Already got one on deck 😉
-As a singer-songwriter, which comes first for you – The lyrics or the music?
Depends, lately it’s been the music. But that can change for sure. When I was younger the music usually started with lyrics from my journal but lately it’s been driven by the instrumental!
-Any final thoughts which you might like to share with readers about your upcoming February 24single Get Free?
You can expect many more covers where this came from. I am looking to record a bunch more of my favorite songs and collaborate with more artists along the way! Keep an eye and ear out this year for more SAN ROMAN music as well. Appreciate everyone who’s listening and sharing the music, it means the world to me.
