It’s the year 2023, and we’d like to celebrate. The only thing is, the number 23 doesn’t come up a ton in pop culture, other than the movie The Number 23. After all, shows don’t run 23 seasons…except for one. As such, to celebrate 2023, here are the five best episodes of the 23rd season of The Simpsons. This season, by the way, aired during the 2011-12 TV season and included the show’s 500th episode.
5. “Them, Robot”
The Nuclear Power Plant replaces everybody, but Homer the scapegoat, with robots. It doesn’t go ideally, though. There are some good robot jokes, and Homer and the robots interacting is funny. Plus, a bit of Mr. Burns is usually fun.
4. “The Food Wife”
Homer is used to being the fun parent, but now it’s Marge’s turn because she and the kids turn into foodies. The climax is a little silly – illicit drugs are involved – but all in all a good episode with a fun musical number.
3. “A Totally Fun Thing That Bart Will Never Do Again”
The Simpsons go on a cruise, and Bart loves it so much that he goes through machinations to keep the cruise going for as long as possible. Watching things get bleak is part of the fun, and the story is rich with incident.
2. “Bart Stops to Smell the Roosevelts”
On the one hand, Bart and some of the ne’er-do-well kids take to Superintendent Chalmers who teaches them in the way of Theodore Roosevelt and being manly outdoorsmen. That reads a little weird, but it plays out well. Now, we don’t need a Chalmers-heavy episode every season, but doing it once worked.
1. “The Book Job”
This is a late-Simpsons great episode. Homer, Bart, and some others join forces to write a YA novel to try and get rich. The episode takes on the trappings of a heist film, but it really works. Lisa has a fun secondary story as well, as she tries to write a hit book the ‘”right” way.
