Actress Mary Stuart Masterson has always seemed a little too smart for Hollywood. In such star-making turns in feature films Some Kind of Wonderful, At Close Range, Chances Are, Fried Green Tomatoes and Benny & Joon, Masterson always came across as the thinking moviegoer’s blond bombshell, someone that you just knew wasn’t simply another pretty face and who would be a brilliant conversationalist. Perhaps that’s why her career never popped like some of her contemporaries in the industry: She never looked very interested in playing the Hollywood game and seemed to take a delight in making career choices which lesser-lights would never have even considered. The end-result for fans of good film and television has been a veritable wealth of amazing acting choices for the 56-year old Manhattan native that has extended for her into the realms of producing, writing and directing. Like I said at the top, this is one chanteuse who has long been smart enough to make her own rules in an ever-turbulent entertainment business.
According to our Daniel Isn’t Real admirers over at Variety, Mary Stuart Masterson has just been cast in the upcoming feature film adaptation of the insanely popular video game Five Nights at Freddy’s. She’ll be joining an already star-studded cast which includes the likes of Josh Hutcherson and Matthew Lillard.
For anyone who hasn’t been near a video game console since Pac-Man lit up video arcades worldwide, Five Nights at Freddy’s is about a security guard and his knee-jerk realization that his new gig as the night guard at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza won’t be the walk in the park that he imagined it would be. Written by wordsmiths extraordinaire Scott Cawthon, Emma Tammi and Seth Cuddeback, this latest video game-to silver screen translation will be helmed by talented director Emma Tammi of The Wind fame. Blumhouse will be handling the producing end of things for the feature film alongside Striker Entertainment.
Five Nights at Freddy’s feels like an atypical choice for Masterson, which makes us even more anxious to see what the filmmakers have conjured up!
Mary Stuart Masterson and Co. begin filming Five Nights at Freddy’s in New Orleans next month.
