Nadia Shafika is known as a private editor before she released her first ever novel Collided. At 20 years old, she has accomplished many things including getting her Bachelor Degree with being the youngest and graduated earliest in her class.
In this interview, she discusses her book, work and perspectives.
When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?
Never, really. Writing was never on my list as my profession. But I think I’ve always had a lot to say when it comes to a perspective or an opinion yet I find it hard to vocalize what I have on my mind as I struggle a lot with digesting my emotions. So writing was always my way out of that confusion.
How long does it take you to write a book?
Approximately 8 months. I think without the breaks and writers block I would’ve finished the novel in 5 months, 6 tops.
What is your work schedule like when you’re writing?
That’s an interesting question because I don’t have a work schedule. I just know that I have to spare 1-2 hours for writing and 8-9 hours for working as an editor, entrepreneur and strategy advisor.
How would you describe yourself in 5 words?
Probably: Determined, Unpredictable, Different, Independent and Self-Reliant.
What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?
These are good questions!
I’d like to think that my writing has a lot of rare and rough emotions on it. Maybe a tragic plot line? I just love to be real and like “that’s it, that’s the ending!”
How do books get published?
So, I began to searched an agent back on early November—it was hard. I think I sent about 15-20 applications to the agents and 10 applications direct to the publishing company. I waited for a month, that was a long-long month. I remember checking my email was the first thing I do in the morning and I hate to look at screen by the morning. I got rejected by 6 Agency companies. Then it occurred to me; I’m not waiting anymore, I’ll just published my novel on my own, that’s when I discovered self-publishing. I learned the important points in a week and ready to take the shot. A week from my publication date I got accepted on 2 UK based publishing companies and I ended up rejecting both on ‘em. What a life!
What do you think makes Collided a good story?
I think what makes Collided a good story is the characters way of thinking—it’s very interesting to see how everybody in the book has a very very different lenses of looking at the world. The natural and originality of the emotions itself is what I also admire from Collided. You just have to read it for yourself!
