George R.R. Martin was born on September 20th, 1948 in Bayonne, New Jersey. He developed an interest in writing from a young age and attended Northwestern University’s Graduate Creative Writing program.

Growing up in a working-class family, George R.R. Martin felt an early entrepreneurial calling, as he has said that his father was “an excellent entrepreneur” and saw him as a role model for success. He attended Mary Jane Donohoe School until 1966 and then Northwestern University, where he majored in journalism. After college, Martin began writing short stories professionally and got his start in screenwriting for television series such as the Twilight Zone. Throughout the ‘70s and ‘80s he wrote for multiple books, comics and small magazines before finally publishing A Game of Thrones in 1996 to much critical acclaim.
