What is the Anatomy of a Tooth
When trying to understand the seven tooth surfaces, it’s helpful to first have a basic understanding of the anatomy of a tooth:
- The crown, represents the noticeable part of the tooth which typically sits above the gum line and is covered by a hard protective layer of enamel.
- The root, embedded in the jawbone it’s covered by a smooth tissue called cementum.
- The dentin, lies below the enamel and cementum, hard and bony it’s what gives teeth their yellowish tint.
- The pulp, powerhouse of the tooth of some sort can be found at the core storing nerves and blood vessels.
As mentioned above, there are several different tooth surfaces that play a crucial role in the understanding oral hygiene.
I. Occlusal Surface
Located in an area typically used for chewing and biting, it is the top surface of a tooth more precisely, on the molar and premolars playing an essential role in the grinding and food crushing process.
II. Lingual Surface
Located on the inner side of the teeth and facing the tongue, the lingual surface plays an important role when it comes to speech and tongue movements, helping you shape the sounds you make.
III. Facial Surface
Often the face first noticed when looking at someone’s mouth and teeth, it’s a surface that is apparant when a person smiles or speaks. On the front sides of the teeth it plays a keep role in the aesthetics of someone’s teeth and is therefore important to keep clean and healthy.
IV. Distal Surface
Found on the exterior part of the teeth, the distal face is the furthest away from the midline of the mouth. Playing a major role in proper teeth alignment, the distal surfaces is on the opposite side of the mouth from the mesial surface.
V. Mesial Surface
Placed closest to the midline of your mouth, the mesial surface is found on the back teeth and just like the distal surface, this surface also plays a crucial role in proper teeth alignment.
VI. Proximal Surface
Found between the mesial and distal surfaces on the back teeth this surface goes hand in hand with the ones mentioned previously in the part they play in having well aligned teeth.
VII. Incisal Surface
At the top of the incisors, this surface represents the biting face of the front teeth, it therefore has an important role when it comes to biting and cutting food often being the first surface to come into contact with food.
