Sometimes it feels like the online world of social media can be a pretty hairy place. A lot of folks out there in the world of Twitter, Facebook, Snap Chat, etc. can come across as a little bit…touchy and more than a little grouchy. Which begs the question: Which came first, super-rude and thoughtless people or the internet itself? Perhaps the really outspoken (i.e. read: Rude) feel emboldened by the veritable anonymity which their computer monitors seemingly offer. Whatever may or may not be vexing some of those who spend a lot of time in computer land, one thing is certain: When Warner Bros. Discovery hired comic book movie gurru James Gunn and cohort Peter Safran to turn around the sinking ship which has been their slate of DCU flicks – movies featuring superheroes based off of and inspired by their DC comic book counterparts – a whole hornet’s nest of angry fans proceeded to go apoplectic, raging as if the resulting decisions made thus far by Gunn and Safran were nothing less than an afront to their own families. Jeez, remember when comic books and their related brethren were supposed to be fun?
A voice of reason and calm has entered the oft-times rowdy and, yes, scary dialogue which vitriolic fans have been slinging like Molotov cocktails towards new DCU stewards James Gunn and Peter Safran, according to our calm, cool and collected pals over at Variety. His name? Zachary Levi…but you can call him Captain Marve…er, I mean ‘Shazam.’
Zachary Levi, the star of the upcoming Shazam! Fury of the Gods took to Instagram to defend Gunn and Safran from irate moviegoers over their recent decisions to overhaul the DCU.
“You have no idea the reasonings behind any of the decisions that are going on. The amount of conjecture and rumor mill and drama and nonsense that keeps getting spun around out there on Instagram and Twitter is laughable. It is unbelievably laughable,” Levi explained. “So I would just say be patient, and give them some space and some time to try and really make something special. And I think something that DC deserves to have, and something that [Zack] Snyder tried to do and it just didn’t ultimately materialize, guys.”
Our new favorite mediator also added that Gunn and Safran are “not just making decisions because they like someone or don’t like someone. They’re making decisions based on what is best for Warner Bros., DC, that entire studio and entity and trying to make as many fans, as much of an audience, happy as they can… If you’re out there and really like what happened before, you can do that, that’s fine. But realize that there’s a lot of people who didn’t like those things, and we should always be trying to tap into as much audience as possible, make as many people happy as possible. That’s what we’re in entertainment for, and that’s what I think Peter and James are trying to do. And it’s not an easy position, they got handed all these things that were already in a lot of conflict. So guys, just fucking give ’em a break. Take it easy. Take a breath. It’s the holidays, for god’s sake. Just go enjoy what the holidays are, give them some time to enjoy the holidays, and let’s see what happens on the other side of this.”
Sometimes someone comes along who just says something perfectly; well played, Mr. Levi and seconded from our little corner of the world.
