What To Drink This Holiday Season

This is a time for interesting seasonal beverages. It’s also a time for hot beverages. Now, for me, if I am drinking something hot, it’s going to be coffee. Black coffee, to be specific. Around the holidays, though, there are a multitude of drinks out there to consider. Some of them are staples of the season. Are they any good, though?

Now, I don’t have to spend much time on hot chocolate. There is nothing esoteric about hot cocoa. It’s a true staple of winter, not just the holidays. When I was a kid, winter meant hot chocolate, and that ruled. That cheap-ass Swiss Miss with the marshmallows that dissolved in a second? I dug it. These days, I don’t really do chocolate any more. That’s a flavor profile that doesn’t work as well for me, particular that artificial milk chocolate. Still, on occasion, hot chocolate is nice, and at the very least I know it is so popular that it doesn’t really need much elaboration at this point.

What about eggnog, though? Have you ever had eggnog? It’s synonymous with the holidays, and yet so many people have never had it. There is something weird about it as a, well, eggy drink. I have had it, but not in over 20 years. The version I drank was sold commercially and I would get it at my local liquor store where I worked as a kid. I remember it being so thick primarily. Honestly, I feel like that’s why I drank it in part? The novelty of “I’m drinking eggnog, so weird.” Is eggnog now archaic, like mistletoe and chestnuts roasting on an open fire?

Lastly, there is mulled wine. I’d like to try it, though. Mulled wine is heated, spiced red wine. Now, I am a little wary about hot wine, but we shall see. I think if you are going to make a holiday drink, go with some mulled wine. Give it a shot. You’ve had enough hot chocolate. You’ll likely never have eggnog. It’s time for some mulled wine!
