Jason Ritter is an actor whose very presence in a film or on television instantly classes up the joint. Possessing his famed father Jack Ritter’s innate acting talent and boy-next-door good looks, the 42-year old Ritter has wowed and dazzled audiences in everything from such fun popcorn flicks as Freddy vs. Jason to more highbrow material like The Intervention, Joan of Arcadia and long-running series Parenthood. In short, he’s one of those rare breed of actors that routinely has words such as “consummate” and “steadfast” placed right before their names; not bad for a day’s work, eh?
Jason Ritter is about to give his SAG card a healthy workout according to our pals over at Variety. The outlet broke the news that the Accused star has signed along the dotted line to feature in a plum role for one episode in the forthcoming sophomore season of the buzzy water-cooler Showtime series Yellowjackets.
Yellowjackets is about a group of high school soccer players that survive a deadly plane crash and, 25 years on, having to deal with all of the things they had to do in order to make it out of a dense and remote forest alive. Part-mystery mixed with a fair amount of psychological horror, Yellowjackets is one of those rare shows that feels like a worthy successor to similar TV classics such as Lost. Featuring a cast that is inspiring – Christina Ricci, Juliette Lewis, Ella Purnell, Sophie Thatcher and Melanie Lynskey – this Bart Nickerson and Ashley Lyle-created series has been an unexpected hit for Showtime ever since its November 2021 premiere.
And speaking of the last name on that above-listed honor roll-call of actors, Melanie Lynskey: Jason Ritter is not only set be Lynskey’s co-star for at least one episode of Yellowjackets, but in real life he’s also her husband. The new gig together will actually mark the second time the two have acted with one another. They previously worked together in this year’s Peacock offering Candy which Lynskey was the star of.
“He’s such a wonderful actor and a really nice person. When I came back to work, everyone was like, ‘Your husband is the nicest person!’ It makes me look smart, like I chose a great partner,” Lynskey said earlier this year about her and Ritter’s on-set acting chemistry. “He’s so good, and it’s really fun to get to work with somebody who is creative and interesting and does something different every take, which is what he does. He’s also so good at improv. It’s hard though because we try to support each other when the other one’s working. If we both were working on something full time, that would be tough. I already feel like our nanny is working so hard when I’m at work!”
All together, Dear and Constant Reader: “How cute is that?”
The second season of Yellowjackets – which will also feature a turn from actor Elijah Wood – is set to premiere on Showtime on March 24, 2023.
