First Trailer for Sequel “Book Club: The Next Chapter” Premieres

When the movie Book Club came out back in 2018, it surprised many box-office looky-loos by scoring a jaw-dropping $104.4 million smackers domestically off of a very meager $14.1 million budget. Those are the sort of returns that Hollywood loves and pays attention to. So with all of that said, is it really any surprise that a sequel reuniting that movie’s amazing cast – Jane Fonda, Diane Keaton, Mary Steenburgen and Candice Bergen – would be winging its way to local multoiplexes ‘round the world?

Fans of director Bill Holderman’s hit film Book Club woke up to an early Christmas treat in the form of the first Italian bachelorette party-tinged trailer for the upcoming sequel Book Club: The Next Chapter (you can see that trailer right here, courtesy of our good pals over at Variety).

So what could possibly reunite all of these amazing thespians for the new entry in this most unlikely of franchises? Give credit to an impromptu wedding proposal which Fonda’s character readily accepts. Faster than you can say National Lampoon’s European Vacation, the quartet jet off for the idyllic Italian countryside to enjoy what looks to be a Road Trip movie for the 21st Century set which will presumably culminate with a European wedding extraordinaire for the lucky Ms. Fonda.

The only surprise about the original Book Club was that a few more studio heads weren’t savy enough to realize that they had a big hit in their hands. Between Keaton (Annie Hall, The Godfather), Fonda (On Golden Pond, The Old Gringo), Bergen ( Sand Pebbles, Gandhi) and Steenburgen (What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, Back to the Future III), this is one incredible cast. Granted that it’s always too easy to Monday morning quarterback – and allowing that the first film wasn’t exactly Gone With the Wind – but it’s safe to say that Bill Holderman’s first film was a fun blast and most audiences were hungry for a movie exactly like this.

Also signing up for a secong-go at Book Club are stalwart actors Andy Garcia (The Godfather III, The Untouchables), Don Johnson (Django Unchained, Miami Vice) and Craig T. Nelson (Call to Glory, Poltergeist). Joining this ensemble of seasoned professionals for the new chapter will be Giancarlo Giannini, Hugh Quarshie and Vincent Riotta.

Returning to the scene of his lovely first crime will be the first film’s original director Holderman who co-wrote the new film with fellow scribe Erin Simms.

Get those book marks ready, Campers! Book Club: The Next Chapter will debut May 12, 2023 just in time for Mother’s Day!
