3 Homemade Drain Cleaner Recipes for Greener Households

Drain problems are common in the kitchen and bathroom and you may already have a trusted brand for cleaning and unclogging your drains. But how about a homemade drain cleaner recipe that will help you save on store-bought brands and also help you keep your drains dirt and clog-free? The best part is that anyone can simply whip up this recipe without doing any hard work.

Should you Trust a DIY Drain Cleaner?

There is that satisfactory appeal that comes with spending money on a product especially when you are sure of the quality. This can be said for many of the brands of drain cleaners you will find at the store or online. They do work well to clean drains and help tackle problems with clogging. But the big question is whether or not it is worth ignoring homemade drain cleaners.

When it comes to DIY and cleaning supplies, you want to make sure that you have an active ingredient that helps with cutting through stains and some form of surfactant that helps in softening the cutting process. And once you can achieve this to the surface whether wood, ceramic, stainless steel, or even fabric in the case of laundry, would have succeeded with your homemade cleaning product.

So to answer the question, homemade drain cleaners work well when you use the right ingredients and make the preparation properly. You can find 3 of the best recipes to make a DIY cleaner for your drains at home.

Baking Soda and White Vinegar Drain Cleaner – For Clogged Drains

If you notice that the kitchen sink doesn’t drain properly, it could be a result of all the dirt stuck in the pipe from when you wash the dishes by hand. And while you don’t need to hurry to the store to buy any fancy drain cleaner/unclogger, you can get the job done with baking soda and white vinegar.

  • Sponge/brush
  • Dish soap

Procedure

  • Pour a cup of baking soda down the drain and let it sink for 20 minutes
  • Pour the white vinegar down the drain (you will notice a bubbling reaction) and use the rag or drain plunger to block the drain so that the reaction can set in.
  • After 30 minutes (or overnight) wash the sink with the sponge/brush (use dish soap if you must)
  • Flush the drain with hot water and rinse the sink

Dish Soap and Hot Water for a Quick Clean

Want to quickly clean your drains after a heavy round of cooking or dishwashing? You could simply rinse through with dish soap and hot water. But you want to make sure to get out any dirt or leftover food particles before flushing with water. Dirt from food particles and other stuff that find their way through your bathroom and kitchen sink are the reasons why your drains are dirty and clogged. So remember to always avoid flushing everything down the drain.
