Season 5 of Psych proved unexpectedly good. The best season of the show, perhaps. Now, can Season 6 live up to that? Or will it see the quality dip. Psych was not a show that revved and hummed and fired on all cylinders week in and week out. It was a show built on being solid and rewatchable. It’s emblematic of the procedural mystery in that sense. Just with more jokes. Here’s my ranking of every episode of Season 6.
16. “Let’s Doo-Wop It Again”
15. “True Grits”
14. “Neil Simon’s Lover’s Retreat”
13. “The Tao of Gus”
12. “Shawn Rescues Darth Vader”
11. “Dean Man’s Curve Ball”
10.“The Amazing Psych-Man and Tap Man, Issue #2”
9. “Shawn and the Real Girl”
8. “Shawn, Interrupted”
7. “Santabarbaratown”
6. “In For a Penny…”
5. “This Episode Sucks”
4. “Autopsy Turvy”
3. “Heeeeere’s Lassie”
2. “Indiana Shawn and the Temple of the Kinda Crappy, Rusty Old Dagger”
1. “Last Night Gus”
You know what? This season is pretty on par with the fifth season, which I did not expect. Now, it’s more hit-or-miss and top heavy. However, in terms of overall quality, it’s solid. There are a few episodes I never really rewatch, but also a handful of my favorites.
“Last Night Gus” is the best Psych episode. It’s a Hangover parody years past the sell-by date on such a concept, and yet it still works. The episode is just so funny and goofy that I find it to be a delight. There are a few horror riffs this season I also enjoy. That’s enough to make up for Anthony Anderson going extremely hammy in “True Grits.” Nobody tried to dial him down, like, five notches? Well, I’ve never accused Psych of deft directing.
I might say that Season 6 is second only to Season 5 in my Psych rankings. That is an unexpected result for me, to be sure. Now, Season 7 has to be a drop of…right?
